metoclopramide: Side effects and warning to young mums to be

Just a warning about the anti sickness medication, metoclopramide. I went to the drop in yesterday due to the side effects, and then after calling 111 was taken to a&E in an ambulance.
I am 7-8 weeks pregnant and 27 yrs old. I was prescribed this medication after the other one I tried didn’t work for the sickness constant nausea. I had 1 dose Friday even and 2 doses Saturday. Around 2pm Saturday I was struggling to breathe, an hour later my jaw started to lock and was gradually getting worse. My teeth were locked in a tight overbite and found myself grinding my teeth uncontrollably.
The paramedics, nurses and doctors at a&E we’re absolutely fantastic, I was there 4 hours whilst they completed checks and I was waiting for results to come back.
They advised that this was most definitely a reaction to the medication and something they have seen before with metoclopramide. Unfortunately, they were unable to give me anything due to my pregnancy.
Please be careful when taking this as in my eyes, it’s not worth the risk with the huge discomfort, pain and anxiety caused. I can’t put into words how horrific my experience was, my boyfriend compared my smile to Wallace (and gromit) and my voice which was impacted to Chris Eubank!

Luckily but the time I got back I was shattered and my boyfriend managed to calm me down so much that my jaw unlocked. I just couldn’t bare the thought of anyone going through this experience so had to share.

Unmumsnetty hugs Flowers it must have been so scary, it happened to me when they gave me maxillon for appendicitis sickness and is a common side effect. Not sure why they still prescribe it :(. I had eyes rolling teeth clenching jaw lock and tardive dyskinesia, they were able to give me an antidote which caused the most horrendous sickness and diarrhoea. Hope you are feeling better

Yes those are two names for the same medication. I had the same reaction more than wi years when given it to combat nausea due to chemo. It's very frightening
