Yes. DP and I are helping out at a community centre on Christmas day. It's a lunch for local people who are alone at Christmas. We are collecting people, helping with the lunch and then dropping them home afterwards. I'm really looking forward to it. We should be home for about 4:30 pm and will have a quiet Christmas buffet, just the two of us.

Bumping this as I want to know what others are doing...

Not christmas day, but spending 4 hours in my local charity shop on Christmas Eve morning as I do every Monday.

Free meals for kids who get subsidised school meals, and I’m an activity coordinator. I’m not usually too chuffed with our local council, but this initiative I’m proud of.

Throughout holidays in our area any child who gets school dinners free can turn up to a variety of venues, with their families, and get a hot meal, a food package and if there’s enough some clothes, toys etc.

It’s not done in a patronising way and it’s always a really good laugh for everyone.

Nice to hear what others are doing. I've wanted to volunteer on Christmas day for years and just never got round to it. This year, I'm not visiting family until friday so it's just DP and I for Christmas day. I happened to see a poster advertising this lunch in my local garage so called the number and asked if they wanted help. We're looking forward to it. At the risk of sounding twee, we're giving the gift of our time to people who would otherwise be alone. We haven't lived in the area for that long either, so you never know, I might even make some acquaintances too!

I am. Well, volunteer work is that the same thing?

I’m working the overnight shift at the Rape Crisis Cente between Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/12/2018 15:54

Thank you Flower, that must be very difficult. I pray for a quiet shift for you.
My local library opens for three hours on Christmas Day for anyone who is alone. They provide internet for anyone who wants to contact family, put on a Christmas film and have treats and small gifts of biscuits etc for anyone who visits. I haven't volunteered before but if they do it again next year I might.

I helped host a Christmas meal and party for 200 homeless and needy people last night and will be out doing outreach the day after Boxing Day

I'm also on call for the ladies that our charity helps all over Xmas and will be available to them if they need me

However, I spend so much of my time doing charity work that Christmas Day is for family only
