We will be visiting in Feb, driving from Derbyshire. I had wanted to get the train but the prices are ridiculous..so car it is. We're staying centrally, so will use one of the park and rides - which would you recommend? We also want to see the Kelpies/Falkirk Wheel so will need the car for that, but guessing will leave it at the P&R for the rest of the time.

Any other recommendations for must dos whilst we're there? Camera obscura is top of my list so far. DD is 8.

Not in Edinburgh, but visited a couple of years ago. The Palace of Holyrood House was wonderful, as was Edinburgh Castle, but we are a couple of old gimmers!!

What sort of things do you enjoy, history, shopping, food? The castle is good for a day out and views, there are lots of museums that you could go to. I recommend one of the walking tours to get to see the city. Howies restaurant is very good, and central. Soderberg cafe is nice too.

I would say Hermiston Gait park and ride near Heriot Watt university, as it's the right side of town for getting to Falkirk.

National museum of Scotland is good (and free)
Dynamic earth is good for kids too
If you are feeling energetic a walk up Arthur’s seat or failing that Calton Hill gives some good views of the city.
I like the portrait gallery (also free) but not everyone’s cup of tea.
Greyfriers kirk is good too

I second Hermiston Gait P&R. Excellent buses to town and not far from Edinburgh Park train and tram station.

Thanks for the recommendations, that park and ride looks perfect.

If you like beaches, even in the cold! Grin, you can get a 26 or 19 from the centre to Portobello which has a lovely prom, cafes, etc. Might be a treat for your DD if you’re in Derbyshire.
