Do you have to pay to go to box hill?

I feel a bit thick asking but I've tried googling and can't get an answer!

Free to walk around but parking is around a fiver, cash only, and quite limited.

It looks like it is owned by national trust so I would say yes.
But it's possible you can walk to it for free, typical of the national trust to not make it clear- see The Giants causeway.

No. You can drive/walk/cycle up & down etc - but, as Loopy says, you'll be charged for parking in the few car parks.

I hope you have a lovely day out. Box Hill is lovely, I have many fond childhood memories of it. Live in Yorkshire now.
