Crying about new bathroom?

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 00:03

I can't even go in there
Why do I get all the workmen that are just not particular about the finish
There's so many little things wrong
And I'm going to be a right moany old cow complaining about them.

And they're supposed to be doing my other bathroom too 😩

The shower pressure is crap- not their fault I know

You mentioned owner in previous post. Do you mean owner of company doing the work? I would get them round ASAP. That workmanship is shoddy

JWrecks · 22/12/2018 10:32

Don't even let them in the 2nd bathroom until this one has been finished to to correct spec.

Absolutely this.

I'm sorry love. That looks surprisingly bad, so, no, you are not just being a moany cow. I could and have done better work myself!!

Echoing keeping a list and photos and taking it to the owner. Best of luck. Flowers

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 10:44

Oh yeah , owner of bathroom company.
I'm hoping he'll just see it and apologise. He was horrified by some other tiling work(fireplace) I had to get redone.

The actual tiling is fine, except for the shower floor drain
So it's the finishing/edging on the coving, the radiator and the positioning of the sink/toilet.
And where's the electrician
And the skip

When we had problems with a dodgy builder the guys at Trading Standards were brilliant.
They dictated the wording of a letter to me, laying out the issues, with the back-up of going to small claims and advised me to send it recorded delivery so the builder had no way of saying he hadn't seen it.

Wishing you well in sorting this out.

tryinganewname · 22/12/2018 11:00

Why have you used them again if they've done shoddy work for you before with the fireplace?

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 11:02

That wasn't them with the fireplace- the fireplace co fitted the woodburner and did the tiles, I had to get them to redo the tiles.

I'm sure it will all get fixed to my standards, I'm sure he'll agree with me.
I could just cry because it's got to be taken apart, more mess. The upheaval of getting work done can't be underestimated.
It upsets the dog, I have to arrange for him to go somewhere if I have to go out.
The front door is constantly open with people coming and going, I can't keep the house warm, the dog barks at every noise, bless him. It's filthy and everyone brings in these little stones from the path that scratch the wooden floor.

I was supposed to have both bathrooms done by now.

It's not the end of the world, it's just infuriating that the job never gets done right first time.

I feel for you.

And old rug or towels or proper deocorators dust sheet might help with problem of the stones scratching the floor. 'Fraid I can't offer more than sympathy for the rest.

shoofly · 22/12/2018 11:29

Honestly the standard is poor and the care they take in your property is dreadful. We had an ensuite fitted three years ago. The plumber who was in charge subcontracted the electrician and the tiler. The very first thing he did was put dust sheets down, from the front door, through the floor, up the stairs, through the bedroom and into the ensuite. The last thing he carried out when he was finished was his hoover.

Make a list of everything that's wrong and get the owner round.

pepperjack I feel your pain, going through the same thing just now and have had an angry/hopeless cry too. Just had bathroom done and it is ok, ensuite is a disaster and had rows with plumber and he's left.

Toilet is so close to the towel rail you get burnt when sitting and your leg touches it.
We have a large shower recess but he has fixed the shower head right near the door which opens the wrong way so you just can't get in the shower without water going everywhere.
Tile finish is poor with variable grout lines and raw edges which he says is not a problem (which is surprising as same tiler and tiles as bathroom as it is very good). Sink unit is way too big and the water doesnt drain away because the waste isnt fitted right.

We apparently are nit picking everything, should have said something earlier (with the use of our crystal ball), he cant do anything because he's mounted it on the tiles etc. We have a choice of paying him for his work or him taking everything back out. Basically a big bully now things are going wrong.

Won't have him back in house and we will need to get someone in in the new year to fix it. Dreading trying to find someone else 😢. Have paid for bathroom, will need to see how much it costs to fix ensuite before negotiations on what we pay for it (he has paid for all the fittings/tiles), he went off in a huff but expect we'll get pressure to pay after Xmas is over.

BrokenWing · 22/12/2018 11:35

What is that in the first picture??

Turn the picture sideways, looks like tiled shower floor and the cutout piece is the drain.

Lovethetimeyouhave · 22/12/2018 11:35

We've had ours done. Paid for by the landlord. Oh my days the mess! The tiles arent even in line. The bottome of the sink is much further forward than the top, there mastik on the door handle..

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 11:38

Yes espresso- that's the shower drain 😩

I think he's positioned it too close to the wall so there's a black abyss next to the wall
There should be a tile the other side of it...I think!

OP posts:
JamieFraser · 22/12/2018 11:39

that's awful. Can I ask where the patterned tiles are from... they're gorgeous😍

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 11:40

He's coming round later
Brokenwing- it's awful isn't it, why don't they check all the bits that can't be undone.
I just don't understand why they never look at things as if they were using them.
Or maybe they have sinks and showers in the wrong place at home and they don't care

LEMtheoriginal · 22/12/2018 11:46

God this boils my piss. My Dp is a builder (carpenter by trade) and would never leave somebodies house in that state.

Hopefully once the owner sees this he will rectify it.

sparklepops123 · 22/12/2018 11:50

Least you've got the upper hand as you've not paid completely . Make sure you refuse to until you're 100% happy. We had this with our builder- he even put the spindles on the staircase upside down 🤨

SoupOnMyTableNowSir · 22/12/2018 11:56

I can't understand why the tiles for the floor have been laid in the direction they have considering the drain runs in the other direction. It jars because one of the drain edges should surely be in line with the tile edge IMHO.

Tiling is all about positioning. I am not a professional but have tiled bathrooms and kitchens in my own house. There is a lot of time spent thinking about symmetry and cuts. This also determined the tiles we bought size wise.

I think it looks like bad workmanship. Hopefully the company owner will be able to have it rectified for you.

OP posts:
pepperjack · 22/12/2018 12:19

Soup- I think that's why it doesn't work. The tiles should run alongside it.

Shoofly- tbf they did put plastic stuff down on the stairs and they have hoovered up ok in the bedroom, it's the sheer stream of people traffic that brings the stones in. If there was stuff down in the hall I'd worry there were stones underneath scratching the floor!

OP posts:
JamieFraser · 22/12/2018 12:20

Thanks... hope you get it sorted

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 13:55

All is good
He agreed with everything,

Will do the painting, get all the plaster off the coving. They took painting off the package cos everyone was asking to touch other things up.
Refix the sink unit.
Redo the drain. The tiler had told him it wasn't quite right.
The toilet is ok, I think my other toilet is higher than normal.
Finding another radiator and using this one in the other bathroom. The tiles there will have to come off.
Just need the electrician, and the skip removing

Much happier

And my painter is doing the finishing touches to the kitchen, painting the chimney breast and it looks fab, so in a much better mood
