Please settle an argument..baby’s sex at conception

Dowser · 21/12/2018 11:57

I say a baby’s sex is determined the minute the egg is fertilised by the sperm
Dh and Dfriend say all Fetus are girls at conception and then they decide which sex they will be later on

Sounds very unscientific to me

I thought that the sperm determined the sex? So sex is determined at conception. I could google but cba.

Aph413 · 21/12/2018 11:59

It's determined at fertilisation. A quick google throws up thousands of results to tell them that.

floodypuddle · 21/12/2018 11:59

They develop in the same way for a period of time and then diverge but the genetics themselves will code M/F.

There is a thread in feminism about this. You are right.

spotsoddsocks · 21/12/2018 12:03

As far as I knew the sperm determines the sex. The egg is X and the sperms are either X or Y. If an X sperm reaches the egg then it will be female (XX) and if a Y sperm reaches the egg then it will be male (XY). That's what I've been told,

GinIsIn · 21/12/2018 12:04

The sex doesn’t develop until later but is preset as the sperm is either a male or a female carrier.

PositivelyPERF · 21/12/2018 12:07

They’ve swallowed the TRA narrative, that suggests we all start out as women, so they can then claim men can actually revert to being women. 🙄 The thing is, they won’t even realise that is where that misinformation has filtered from. It’s the drip drip drip if misinformation that is confusing children and stupid, woke adults.

RightOcciputAnterior · 21/12/2018 12:12

Genotypically, sex is determined at conception.

Phenotypically it takes a bit longer to become apparent.

But your genetic destiny is set at the moment of conception.

cjt110 · 21/12/2018 12:13

Egg is X. Sperm is X or Y. Therefore the combination determines the sex of child

PositivelyPERF · 21/12/2018 12:28

No doubt they’ll be like many and think Wikipedia is an actual fact filled website so show them the simple explanation of how sperm determines sex. At least Wikipedia is correct on this one.

Chromosomal sex is determined at the time of fertilization; a chromosome from the sperm cell, either X or Y, fuses with the X chromosome in the egg cell. Gonadal sex refers to the gonads, that is the testis or ovaries, depending on which genes are expressed. bless their little cotton socks. 😁

Dowser · 21/12/2018 12:33

Thank you.
I have a level biology...fifty years ago nearly..but I’m sure I remembered that as correct.

As I understand it the sex is determined at conception but all foetus’ develop as females until around 6 weeks when a rush of testosterone happens - if the baby has the male chromosomes the male sexual organs develop and the child develops normally as a boy
This is why men have nipples

If the hormone rush doesn’t happen the foetus develops as a female even though genetically they’d be male

PositivelyPERF · 21/12/2018 13:39

That has been debunked, Heatherjayne1972, but I can understand why it was believed in the early days. But thankfully science has moved on.

Dh and Dfriend say all Fetus are girls at conception and then they decide which sex they will be later on

This would never work for us indecisive types.

Gentlygently · 21/12/2018 13:45

If you google pgd sex you will see it is possible to determine the sex of an embryo (or blastocyst, I forget when they turn from one to the other). At amount 3-5 days post fertilisation you can take cells from the developing embryo and test them for various things including sex. This can be used to screen out embryos if the parents have a sex-linked disorder.

NutellaFitzgerald · 21/12/2018 14:05

It's not true that foetuses start out as female and then some become male. It may be true that male and female foetuses are indistinguishable in their physical development but boys don't start out as female. Female is not the absence of masculinity. It is a sex in its own right. No ovaries, vagina or vulva are unmade in the process of becoming male, they just develop along a different trajectory from a certain point onwards.

An early foetus is not even sexless. It's just that in early development they are physiologically indistinguishable until a certain point.

For that matter, a blastocyst of a mouse is, at one stage, indistinguishable from a human, but that doesn't mean were all mice up to a certain point.

OnAScaleOf1to10ItsA7 · 21/12/2018 14:08

The sperm determines the sex. From the moment the sperm enters the egg, the cells are coded to be either XX or XY.

As the foetus develops, it develops girl bits first and then if the cells have XY chromosomes those girl bits develop further into boy bits.

OnAScaleOf1to10ItsA7 · 21/12/2018 14:09

It's why men have useless nipples.

PositivelyPERF · 21/12/2018 14:16

develops girl bits first and then if the cells have XY chromosomes those girl bits develop further into boy bits.

No it doesn’t! It doesn’t have girl bits which go on to change into a penis, but is in effect a blank slate, that develops the genitals of the sex determined by the sperm.

Heatherjayne1972 · 21/12/2018 14:34

Oh ok. There was a program on a while back about two girls who should have been boys
The program suggested that the 6 week post conception hormone rush didn’t happen which is why they were genetically male with female bodies

PositivelyPERF · 21/12/2018 14:47

Sorry, Heatherjayne1972, I know it’s very difficult when the TRAs are spouting bastardised science in order to manipulate the public. Unfortunately they and their supporters have a strong hold in many tv stations. Always take what they say wth a huge prince of salt and research properly.

8misskitty8 · 21/12/2018 17:00

Sperm determines the sex, and it is set at conception. This has been proven scientifically.
That is why IVF can be used to select the sex of a baby in some countries, it can been seen/ detected very early so doctors can select.

UhYeahISureHopeItDoes · 21/12/2018 17:31

It's decided at conception by the sperm having either an X or Y chromosome but all babies start developing as girls until 6 weeks, then they start to develop either a penis or a vagina.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 21/12/2018 18:30

@UhYeahISureHopeItDoes please read the other posts on the thread. They aren't developing 'as girls'. They are physically indistinguishable till a certain point. But they are still male or female.
