In vino veritas

Do you think it’s true that people speak the truth when drunk? Interested in views.

I’m friends with a bloke I see fairly often and chat to regularly but nothing untoward has ever happened and I’ve never got the vibe he’s into me. He’s pretty shy and non-demonstrative generally as well. But on a night out with friends a week back he got really drunk and after seeing me off sent a message saying he loves me.

I’m not sure what to think. He’s been in touch a lot since and I’ve seen him twice (his initiation both times) but it feels like friends who care about each other and I’m not sure if it’s true and just said while he was drunk? We drank together again last night and hung back after everyone had left but it was like he panicked after a couple and left.

What do you think - in vino veritas? Or just boozy, platonic words?

I think he fancies you.

But to answer your wider point, it's hard to generalise because sometimes alcohol can remove the inhibition that's preventing us from saying something. On the other hand, sometimes - and perhaps more often - it makes us talk bollocks.

I am certainly known to talk bollocks when drunk although it’s usually bollocks of the thinking I’m funnier than I am variety
