Stupid shoelaces - round not flat

Why do so many shoes have those stupid laces that are like snakes, instead of being flat like ribbon? They are usually barely long enough and they keep coming undone every 5 minutes. Ok I can take them out and relace with better laces, but it's a right old faff. Is there something I can do to get them to stay done up for longer?

Rub them down with some fine sandpaper to make them grippier? Possibly more of a faff than relacing though...

Thanks. It's going to less of a faff I should think, as I'll only need to do the ends tat tie. Also (amazingly for me) I have some sandpaper already in the house.

I was grumbling about round shoe laces only yesterday. I feel your pain.

Sandpaper made no difference. Nor did spraying with shoe protector. Nor hairspray. Am thinking I might be able to do something with rubber bands...

If anyone wants to know, I can report that a small rubber band looped in a figure of eight round the bow of the laces seems to be working
