^THE^ Drone

Why the fuck has it taken 18 hours to decide to shoot the fucking thing down?

"With pressure increasing to find the perpetrator, Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw, the airport's policing commander, said: 'Each time we believe we get close to the operator, the drone disappears; when we look to reopen the airfield, the drone reappears. I'm absolutely convinced it's a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport'."

Clearly a deliberate act. Just shoot the fucking thing down

Germany also had a security event at an airport.

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 21/12/2018 01:23

Plane en route to Heathrow just diverted to Luton

lobeydosser · 21/12/2018 01:27

Eerily today is thirtieth anniversary of Lockerbie

DubBeGoodToMe · 21/12/2018 01:30

Heathrow’s got IT failure? Shit I’m supposed to be flying out of there today

If you want light relief from this...

This picture was taken or the drone at Gatwick by an airport worker who put it on Twitter yesterday morning. Just shortly after he posted it the imagine and his account were deleted.

It's all getting stranger

Something a bit lighthearted

I do love a good conspiracy theory, but I'd be spitting feathers if I was caught up in this. Sky News rolling headlines saying they've no timeline as to when the airport will reopen (from Head of Sussex Police).
What do you do in this case? Just go back home? Or try to sit it out? Feel really sorry for people with kids to try to keep amused, ipad batteries dying etc. Ruined holidays or trips to family.

The air industry seems to always be an easy target.
I wonder whether police received a warning that this was going to happen which would account for why they were there ahead of time.

Or would radar pick a drone up?

I'm just thinking that without a heads up, they might not have known that there were drones on the loose and aircraft might have been impacted by a collision.

I'm supposed to be flying out of Gatwick on the 27th....I hope it's sorted by then. Bastards whoever they are. I feel for the poor buggers stuck there!

Punto1 · 21/12/2018 02:07

Putting 2 and 2 together, and coming up with 1 million, here's my mad, middle of the night theory.

Police on site ahead of drone sitings = police received a warning.
Man arrested and taken off flight from Heathrow to Dublin = Irish
Who traditionally gave warnings = IRA
People responsible = RIRA
Why? = Because of Brexit and border question

Also, it's highly likely man was just a little bit imbibed, the RIRA are no longer active etc. and I'm talking through my tinfoil hat.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 21/12/2018 06:15

Flights now happening in and out but no news.

Anyone here used to watch Spooks? I remember them finishing witht the BBC report to "cover up" whatever had really happened, gas leak etc. There is so much we may never know....

feesh · 21/12/2018 06:42

People get arrested and taken off flights every day of the week. It’s not unusual.

canigetaliein · 21/12/2018 06:50

So if flights are now leaving I assume they have the drone/owner?

LEMtheoriginal · 21/12/2018 06:53

My question is why are these things still allowed to be on sale?

NicoAndTheNiners · 21/12/2018 06:54

The police need to get some decent drone pilots to stalk the rogue drone back to base. To me this would be the best chance of finding the person and stopping this.

00100001 · 21/12/2018 07:21

" feel really uneasy about thousands of people trapped in one place.... "

well...noone is trapped there... they're free to leave :/

canigetaliein · 21/12/2018 07:25

The guardian is saying that flights have resumed because “the airport has put in additional mitigating measures to protect against drones and these measures have given him the confidence to re-start flights.” Wonder what they are & why it took so long?

Ifailed · 21/12/2018 07:39

I'm sure someone has already done this, but if this drone(s) is being operated via Wifi, then surely it would be easier enough to use a network sniffer to identify the traffic between it and the controller? From that you'd be able to find out the internet address of the device that is being used to control it, and from that who is providing network access (e.g. BT) and hence identify the user?

Chewbecca · 21/12/2018 07:51

Am assuming the additional measures are that they're carefully drone spotting & are ready to take it out immediately.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/12/2018 07:52

My question is why are these things still allowed to be on sale?

Absolutely. And cars kill loads of people so we should definitely ban them.

I'm sure someone has already done this, but if this drone(s) is being operated via Wifi

IMO it is most likely that the drones are flying completely autonomously so not connected to anything.

TooTrueToBeGood · 21/12/2018 07:52

Why the fuck has it taken 18 hours to decide to shoot the fucking thing down?

Hitting a small, fast-moving object several hundred metres off the ground with a rifle is nigh on impossible. You'd need to blatt a hell of a lot of rounds at it to have any chance of a hit and all those rounds have to come down somewhere. Would you want to do the risk assessment for that? A shotgun only has an effective range of about 50 metres so that isn't a viable option either.

ManicUnicorn · 21/12/2018 08:00

When used properly drones can be really helpful. We had bad hill fires here in the summer and the police and fire brigade used them to fly over the fires to see the true extent of what was happening.

IDontLikeZombies · 21/12/2018 08:18

Something's not right is it?
Loads more police and support staff around here in Glasgow, too.

TooTrueToBeGood · 21/12/2018 08:35

Loads more police and support staff around here in Glasgow, too.

It may be connected but equally it may not be. The IS/AQ terrorist threat hasn't gone away and at this time of year the threat is likely to be deemed higher so it would be normal to see security increased.

SaveKevin · 21/12/2018 08:43

I’m near heathrow and we had loads more police about yesterday.
Normally we don’t see them and they only attend awful crimes now. But yesterday there were loads.

As much as I think it will be a bored 16 year old having a laugh this does feel like something else
