Where are people shopping these days?

I was chatting to some friends who work in retail and we were pondering where are people shopping / spending money these days?

People need clothes but loads of clothes shops are either struggling - even River Island and Asos who have done well previously. Mothercare is closing a lot of shops, Hamleys is closing, House of Fraser is closing shops. It left us wondering, which ones are doing well that you don't really hear about?

People still need stuff so where are they buying it?

I used to like Next and M&S but have gone off them lately. I've been shopping more in Debenhams lately. How about you?

halcyondays · 20/12/2018 11:46

Primark, New Look, H and M and the supermarkets. Next and M&S

In UK I shop mainly at John Lewis, Hush and Whistles. Kids= John Lewis, GAP and Boden. I think the real issue is that so much has moved online that it's hard to justify the physical infrastructure anymore.

WrapAndRoll · 20/12/2018 11:54

John Lewis, Debenhams, George, Tu.

I get kids stuff from H&M or M&S or sometimes Next.

My stuff from H&M, Primark, PLT, Missguided, New Look, Topshop etc. River Island is overpriced for it's style.

Online mostly.
Amazon for pretty much everything and catalogue for clothes.

peachypetite · 20/12/2018 11:58

I think the issue is people are spending less?

Blue25654 · 20/12/2018 12:17

George and frugi for kids clothes. Amazon for almost everything else. Occassionally pop to town for poundland if I can. I need to buy some new clothes for me and it has occurred to me I have no idea where to shop. Everything I’ve bought from sainsburys has fallen apart very fast (after 1or 2 wears) and couldn’t find anything suitable in george.

Primark and Sainsburys for me, Topshop and JD Sports for teenage DD! I hardly buy clothes for me though..

I've fallen back into M&S which is a bit depressing in itself. H&M are great but sizing is weird. A lot of my friends rave about Zara but I find the quality and sizing up the wall. I like Sainsbury's clothes but find them a tad bland. I don't mind Next but you end up with loads of people wearing the same thing as you.

I shop mainly in Zara, Primark, River Island, H&M and a few independent boutiques near me. Also, one or two ebay shops and a couple of other websites.
