Does anyone remember watching Only Fools 'Time on our Hands' when it was aired?

Was it a surprise when they became millionaires? Did you still expect it to all go wrong?

I was only 10 when it aired and consequently only watched many years later when it was common knowledge they had become millionaires so it wasn't a surprise IYKWIM... wish I was old enough to have been able to be able to watch it live.

IIRC there were 3 Christmas specials aired over a few days so there was a build up.

I think I realised the pocket watch was going to be worth £££ but only towards the end of the three specials.

WhyAmISoCold · 19/12/2018 22:36

Yes I remember watching it. Loved it.

WhyAmISoCold · 19/12/2018 22:36

I never realised they were going to become millionaires.

I think it was billed as the last ever episode and there had been the long running line ‘Rodney this time next year we’ll be millionaires’ so I do think there was an expectation from the public that they would have a happy ending.

cliffdiver · 19/12/2018 22:41

@WhyAmISoCold I am so jealous!

As the writer has sadly died, there won’t be any more episodes, if that’s what you mean

ManicUnicorn · 20/12/2018 07:54

Yes I watched it when it aired at Christmas 1996. It was the perfect ending, and really they should have left it at that. With Del and Rodney as millionaires, this time next year we'll be millionaires being one of Del's catchphrases.

The episodes in the early 2000's were crap and the Magic had gone. I don't think David Jason can do Del's voice properly anymore either, he sounded way too posh on the comic relief sketch they did.

Holidayshopping · 20/12/2018 07:55

I don’t think I ever watched any of those later episodes as the looked a bit crap!

MyArris · 20/12/2018 07:59

I watched it with my mum and family. We realised (fairly late on) what was going to happen. We all shed a happy tear - soppy but OFAH was a massive part of our family entertainment growing up so we were proper invested.

Happy days.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 20/12/2018 07:59

Yes it was sort of expected- we all cheered.

The episodes afterwards were terrible- magic had gone. They should have left them alone after they became millionaires.

formerbabe · 20/12/2018 08:05

I remember it. I'm a huge only fools fan...I still watch it most days usually whilst ironing! I agree that should have been the last episode. It was perfect.

Sewrainbow · 20/12/2018 08:08

I watched and thought it was brilliant. I thought it was a shame they brought them when they had lost all the money, took the shine off the fairy tale ending but made it more realistic I suppose...

LoisWilkerson1 · 20/12/2018 08:11

Yes I criedBlush

cliffdiver · 20/12/2018 08:29

Sorry, my last post was on the wrong thread.

I also agree that it should have finished after that episode - it was the perfect ending.

Yes I remember it. I think the watch was supposed to be worth 50k or something but it went for several million?

There was a sad bit when they all went back to the flat after moving into their big properties. Uncle Albert got a boat I think!

I think the show went a bit downhill after that. I need to watch it again over Christmas. Xmas Smile

RandomlyChosenName · 20/12/2018 09:42

It was brilliant. The best bit, apart from the happy ending, was the fact that the watch they found has basis in history (Harrison’s watch) and if someone did find it, then it would be worth a lot of money.

NewName54321 · 20/12/2018 09:46

I remember thinking that they would become millionaires but that it would get taken away from them immediately afterwards though.
Like others, I think that should have been the last episode.

yesmelord · 20/12/2018 09:53

Never saw it live but love watching it every year!

I have that do,do,do,dooo song they put on at the end in my head now!

MamaLovesMango · 20/12/2018 09:55

Yes. I was also a kid but I remember a real sense that you knew what was coming.

MamaLovesMango · 20/12/2018 09:56

Crosby Stills and Nash - Our House @yesmelord

Our House is a very very very fine house, with two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard, but now it’s always easy because of you Smile

LowbrowVictoriana · 20/12/2018 10:09

Yes, I saw it too. It was really good, a fantastic finale.
Shame it wasn't actually the finale, though.

yesmelord · 20/12/2018 10:22

@MamaLovesMango was that part of the same song I'm thinking of?

The do do do dooooo bit [with trumpets??] when they have their money and are buying cars and walk in the the pub at/near the end?

I think I'm just going to have to put it on now! Much to husbands and daughters dismay! Grin.... I always have to have a fry up of some sort when I'm watching only fools, takes me back to being a little girl!

LittleBearPad · 20/12/2018 10:25

I loved it. It was such a surprise.

They really should have stopped there. The later episodes were rubbish.

GrumpyOldMare · 20/12/2018 10:28

Never watched it.
