I was prescribed this along with tranexamic acid during a recent hospital stay to stop bleeding. I wasn't hospitalised for the bleeding btw I was admitted for kidney pain and pelvic pain. The bleeding had to stop as my iron levels dropped to below 60.
Bleeding stopped just over a week ago. I am back on both since Monday as I am bleeding again. This is the worse one in several years and yet again my iron levels are dropping fast. Which in all likelihood will mean more transfusions before the weekend as the tablets and injection aren't keeping up at the moment.
So from my experience, I would say don't fuck around with this drug. From talking to my consultant today about the current bleed, the suggested treatment is now getting scrapped and I will be having surgery unless things improve dramatically. In the meantime, I have to stay on this shit as the risk of bleeding more is high and my body won't cope.
Other side effects have included vomiting, a decrease in appetite which wasn't great, to begin with, and I have lost half a stone in the past week which doesn't help with my kidney or energy levels. My anti d's have had to be increased as have my talks with mh team since I was put on this medication. My blood sugars are high and have to be monitored. I am retaining fluid again, so will also in all likelihood have a catheter back in by the weekend. Then there's the weird shit that happens to my vision and because I never know when an attack is going to happen I cannot go out alone, not that I can anyway because I am flooding, feeling faint and having disturbing dark thoughts. And the pain, I had painful periods anyway and like I said I was admitted for pain, but this pain is something entirely different and started when I was still in the hospital. I am now on various pain meds including a morphine equivalent, and these pain meds are only taking the edge off. Normally I would pop ibuprofen (not allowed it anymore) and paracetamol, along with a hot water bottle which all will deal with the pain.
If I had a time machine I would go back and refuse to go on this stuff. I've used tranexamic acid on and off for years without issues. The side effects are known ones from norethisterone. I fucking hate this medication. Great it works for some, but if you're one of the unlucky ones then you are fucked. Although my fault for not going online and looking at the side effects as I would have said nah. But when you're in pain, flooding, iron is dropping, on powerful meds and having endless tests every day, any rational thinking isn't there.
