Find It Hard Not To Correct People

I think I am turning into my DM, as she is very hot on grammer (or is it grammar?!), spelling etc. I have got into trouble a few times on Facebook etc as I have (unintentionally) offended people who are dyslexic. A lot of the time though it isn't dyslexia or learning difficulties but just laziness or ignorance. I just can't seem to help myself! Yesterday I saw a pic of a Facebook friend at her Christmas party - her DH had captioned it "X's Xmas Due" instead of "Do". I commented that since he had written due, I thought he was saying that she was expecting again. I noticed today that the comment had been removed & the caption now read "X's Christmas Party". I felt bad! But as I said, I just can't seem to help myself. I wonder what some folks actually learn in school. Does anyone else get bothered by stuff like that? Misused apostrophes are another one!

You probably shouldn’t stick ampersands in the middle of normal sentences then...

Fevertree · 18/12/2018 23:58

Or use capital letters for every word in a sentence

BitOutOfPractice · 18/12/2018 23:59

Correcting people's grammar and spelling on social media just makes you look like a dick.

And if you're going to do it, make sure you never ever make a SPAG mistakes yourself.

So yeah.

tigercub50 · 19/12/2018 00:00

The capitals are because it was a title of a photo

BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 00:01

Like what I did.

And yes. You really can help yourself Confused

LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 19/12/2018 00:01

Got to be a wind-up.

olivertwistwantsmore · 19/12/2018 00:07

Just sit on your hands. Don’t correct people unless you’re being paid for it (I’m an editor). It makes you look unkind. And like a dick.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 00:09

I'm three snowballs in and taking everything at face value

BumDisease · 19/12/2018 00:12

*grammar

Why are you talking about laziness when you've used an ampersand in the middle of a sentence rather than just type the word "and"?

Starting sentences with "but" is a bit of a no-no.

tigercub50 · 19/12/2018 00:16

I'm not unkind or a dick, I promise. I would imagine a lot of people get annoyed by it but don't go as far as correcting it. I have seen loads of threads where people are annoyed by the incorrect use of, for example, "there", "they're" or "their" or by people writing "your" when they mean "you're". In the case of "due" instead of "do", I was making a little joke (they have a large family). And sometimes it can be quite amusing eg "Christmas Bizarre", which turned out to be predictive text. I also like "Chester Drawers" on the selling pages & "All contributions greatly received"!

OP posts:
LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 19/12/2018 00:16

Agree with the first two Bum but starting sentences with conjunctions is acceptable.

It was the grammar thing that made me think OP was on the wind-up.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 00:19

You said in your op that you do correct people. Which is dickish

LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 19/12/2018 00:20

Can you throw me a snowball Bit? Xmas Grin

HellonHeels · 19/12/2018 00:21

Youay not think you're being unkind or a dick - but you are.

You made fun of your friend's Facebook post. Unnecessary and mean spirited. Presumably they were hurt and embarrassed by your comment if they deleted it.

Ask yourself why you want to hurt and criticise your friends.

BumDisease · 19/12/2018 00:22

"Agree with the first two Bum but starting sentences with conjunctions is acceptable."

Interesting! I had an English teacher who absolutely would not tolerate it, same as starting a sentence with however so it's a rule I've always stuck by.

This is why I don't go around correcting spelling and grammar!

BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 00:22

I write for a living and I don't give a stuff about grammar mistakes on SM or starting a sentence with a conjunction. I'm very helpful aren't I?

HellonHeels · 19/12/2018 00:22

Could I also have a snowball please? I haven't had one yet this festive season. Extra cocktail cherries please.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 00:23

LadyRochford I won't throw you one. But I will mix you one. Snowballs are the taste of Christmas. Official.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 00:24

Snowballs all round.

HowOftenDoYouClean · 19/12/2018 00:24

Essentially you sound a rude twat, saying you cant help yourself is either a lie and you dont want to or the environment which you grew up in was either full of the same dickish people or people who didnt have a backbone to stop you

Dinosforall · 19/12/2018 00:24

Yes, making people look stupid in public is indeed a dick move. HTH

LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 19/12/2018 00:24

Oh yep, I was taught NEVER to use the Oxford comma. Use it now but still feel the disapproval from the nuns (Catholic school).

SassitudeandSparkle · 19/12/2018 00:28

Grin three snowballs in - I wish I was! Grin

Yes, you can help yourself OP - it's not compulsory and makes you look bad. I can't believe that you would actually be so rude as to actually say:-

I commented that since he had written due, I thought he was saying that she was expecting again.

madroid · 19/12/2018 00:30

I also write for a living and I also couldn't give a monkey"s left knackered if I see mistakes. I register them but really can't be bothered correcting people unless I'm being paid.

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 19/12/2018 00:35

Is it a subconscious attempt to make you feel better about yourself? Stemming from your own personal insecurity?
