How long did it take you to pass your driving test and did you pass first time?

I sat my driving test in 2011. It was an unfortunate set of circumstances. My driving instructor got a new job 3 weeks before my test date and couldn't give me any more lessons, I couldn't find another instructor to take me on at short notice for such a short time. I sat the test having not even covered all of the stuff I needed to. It was an absolute disaster (3 majors and one fault that was worse than a major) and I was moving abroad the following day so no chance to do a re-test.

Nearly 8 years later and I've finally booked in to do a course of driving lessons! I'm very anxious about it all because it went so badly first time round so I'm hoping to hear some positive stories on here Smile thanks!

Had lessons once a week for just under a year. Purposely, wasn't in a rush and figured it would give me experience of driving in many conditions which it did. Ice, snow, rain, blinding sun and night time etc. Passed first time

I was 16 when I passed my licence, 2nd time round so started driving at 15. This was 20 years ago in NZ and NZ use to allow you to learn to drive at 15...

About 2 months of weekly double lessons but I had my own car so was putting in the extra hours any time someone could take me out.
Passed 1st time with 2 minors.

Passed second time after about 20 lessons in total (no extra driving in between). This was mid eighties and only really learned to drive properly years later on an intensive driving course for work.

Lightsong · 19/12/2018 07:48

Started lessons twice a week Feb 2010 and passed first time Apr 2010.

I didn't take to driving at first, I don't have great co-ordination so struggled with the gears/clutch particularly. Then I got an automatic and it was great, passed the test first time!

TheDogsMother · 19/12/2018 08:21

It took two years because I couldn't afford to have lessons every week. I failed the first and rightly so, should have passed the second in my opinion , eventually passed on the third attempt. Same examiner all three times Sad

24 lessons and passed second time

So 20 lessons and the first test failed

4 more lessons and passed

couldnt really practice as i just couldn't turn the steering wheel on my mums car Grin

I think I had ten hours of lessons over five weeks then passed first time.

Motorcycle licence was a two and a half day course including tests.

2nd time. I found driving with DH on the passenger seat before taking my test was really helpful. So instructor taught me to drive but when I was nearly there, DH practised with me between lessons.

I passed at 28, having had lessons off and on for 10 yrs. total of 40 lessons in that time, 6 different instructors, 4 different cities. Failed first time, 2 majors. I knew I wasn't ready and was more scared of passing! Second time I did it 4 weeks later with 2 minors and passed.

For some people, having failed the first test makes it easier to pass second time. Less anxiety about the process, the examiner, how it all works. I was able to focus on driving and having a good old chat!

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 19/12/2018 09:31

I had lessons on and off for about 2 years, but I passed first time.

RoyalChocolat · 19/12/2018 09:36

40 hours of lessons. I passed the second time.

wendywoopywoo222 · 19/12/2018 09:41

Started on my 17th birthday. Passed first time 12 weeks later. Was very lucky to have a car so couldn't wait to get driving.

dogmum0 · 19/12/2018 09:45

I had my first lesson on my 17th birthday it took me just under a year but I passed first time with no minors!

PickleSarnie · 19/12/2018 09:59

Had at least 20 lessons. Passed test first time. Although I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have been the case had I been made to reverse park. As soon as the examiner asked me to reverse around a corner and do a turn in the road and I knew there would be no parallel parking I relaxed and the rest of the test was fine.

GimmeGimmeHellYeah · 19/12/2018 10:01

One lesson a week for around 8 months. No opportunity to practice in between. Passed first attempt, two minors.
