Protecting my wooden furniture

Hi ladies, I needed some advice please.

I have a lovely, large wooden chest of drawers in my living room. It is made from pine and it is black (most likely spray painted by the manufacturers). It is similar to this (but mine is black and in a matt finish):
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PINE-FURNITURE-AYLESBURY-4-6-DRAWER-WELLINGTON-CHEST-NO-FLAT-PACKS/132253662535?hash=item1ecaeebd47:g:lJYAAOSwA3tXoTcO

Anyway, we are planning to start using it as a TV table. It is in good condition, but there are some places where the paint has chipped off and because it is a matt finish it picks up finger marks quite quickly.

I do not want to have to repaint the whole chest of drawers, but what could I do to repair the few chips that I have got? Also what kind of door knobs would give it a modern look? And is there anything I can paint over it like a varnish to protect the surface and to stop it picking up finger marks? I don't want too much of a glossy finish, but would like a slight sheen.

I am on a budget and I don't want to spend too much time on it but as it will be more or less a centre piece in our room I need to spruce it up a bit.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks
