Most don't have 19 days off though do they? Most will be doing work in their constituency - surgeries, attending events, visits, case work. I have worked with a lot of MP's and to be honest I've found them all really hard working (not saying that is 100% true for all MPs)

They have no parliamentary meetings. I have reduced meetings over Christmas too. It's time they can catch up on constituency work! The media has a lot to answer for.

I truly despise ours (he's s knob and completely self serving) but on Friday he's visiting the local hospital and schools. He also has various clinics for local people. He's on holiday in the same way as teachers are. Not at work as such but lots of essential work still to do.

18 days off (but I only work three days a week)

You seem to think that Mps only work when parliament is sitting. Wrong

twoheaped · 18/12/2018 13:05

18 days. Whoop, whoop Grin

MrsLJ2014 · 18/12/2018 13:17

I have 19 days from when I finish to when I go back but that includes the weekends, which I don't work and I usually work 3 days a week.

They don’t have to be in parliament but that doesn’t mean they’re not working.

There’s a ridiculous amount of work to be done that isn’t in parliament. Our MP (who I don’t like and frankly have no reason to defend him) has 4 constituency events between Friday and NYE and that’s before he does everything else like case work.

I worked for an MP for 7 years. She probably got 6 proper actual days off over that 19 day period inc Christmas and NYD

This sounds like ones of those goady FB status’s written by idiots that believe everything they read in the DM...

allyouneedis · 18/12/2018 13:22

I have Christmas Day off, that is all 😢

Snbre · 18/12/2018 13:25

I used to work for an MP, he was a knobber of the highest order who shouldn't of been in charge of pritt stick never mind a constituency Grin. But I will give him the kudos that he did some serious working hours, they dont get that full time off when parliament isn't sitting, they come back to their constituencies and meet people, go to Christmas events, hold constituency meetings, meet with constituency staff who have a million things to go through etc

DS1 finished last Friday and goes back on the 7th. He's in the army but he's spent 4 months out of the country this year, spent many weeks away in this country and worked umpteen weekends.

DH finishes on Friday lunchtime and, also, goes back on the 7th. He's in the RAF.

Roomba · 18/12/2018 13:30

Well, yeah. But Universal Credit and my p/T wage pays a lot less than an MP's allowance... And I'll probably do far more for my local community over the holidays than my invisible MP will.

I have four weeks off due to where I work not being open. But I don't get paid at all for any of it.

Heatherjayne1972 · 18/12/2018 14:00

Luckily the country is in great shape and there’s really nothing for mps to do in Westminster.....

Oh wait ...

lljkk · 18/12/2018 14:11

DS1 is another one in military with 3+ full proper weeks completely off, no work duties at all. I am getting similar.

Last summer my MP spent 5 days solid doing constituency surgeries in specific village halls. Not in Parliament but still work.

tenbob · 18/12/2018 14:37

DH's company closes on Friday and reopens on 7th Jan, so that's 16 days off including weekends
They have to use either 3 or 5 days of their holiday allowance and get given the rest as bonus holiday days

They employ about 8000 people nationally, mix of white and blue collar jobs
