Gravy does not go with cauliflower cheese, neither does baked bean sauce!

SnugglySnerd · 18/12/2018 09:33

Crusty bread to dip in the cheese sauce.

MeetOnTheSIedge · 18/12/2018 10:05

Gravy, just no! I can't eat cauliflower cheese as part of a roast dinner, they don't go together at all IMO.

Serious question - I have the remains of a cheeseboard, Stilton, black bomber cheddar and Brie. Can I stick them all into the cheese sauce for cauli cheese? My heart says yes, my head says ask Mumsnet.

AssassinatedBeauty · 18/12/2018 11:29

I would put the cheddar and the Stilton in the sauce (if you like blue cheese), but not the Brie, personally.

Pythonesque · 18/12/2018 11:34

I'm another who is happy to have cauliflower cheese as a main dish on its own as is. That's how my mother used to serve it when we were growing up. You need a decent amount of cauliflower per person, obviously.

If I do it nowadays I have the complication of one non-meat eater but one non-dairy (and shouldn't really have a lot of dairy myself). So typically I'll make my sauce with a bit of mustard in, then split it in half. One half gets gammon added and the other half gets the cheese, and we're all happy!

Oogle · 18/12/2018 11:42

I like it on it's own but am partial to enjoying it with a side of chips or garlic bread.

I now really, really want cauliflower cheese for dinner.

peppered mackerel goes really well!

CakeNinja · 18/12/2018 11:54

Dp makes it as a side to roast beef.
I can’t stand it, wet saucy food next to non saucy things, slopping everything up Shock no thank you!!
I have never heard of it as a main meal though.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 18/12/2018 12:00

This thread has made me want cauliflower cheese. I like it as a side on a roast dinner, but I also like it on its own.

msnowtybach · 18/12/2018 12:36

Crusty bread, rocket salad.

happyasasandboy · 18/12/2018 13:39

Sausages or gammon.
And peas :)

BlackInk · 18/12/2018 14:03

We usually do it with either tomatoes or some sort of green veg (peas, green beans, etc.) and maybe some new potatoes... You don't really need meat or eggs with it for protein - the sauce is made of cheese and milk.

funmummy48 · 18/12/2018 14:08

We always have it with potatoes, (jacket or mashed) and either bacon, sausages, corned beef or ham. Yummy!

luckylavender · 18/12/2018 14:10

I serve it as a main mail but add pasta, so it's a cauliflower / Mac cheese. I also use coloured pasta so it looks better. Having it tonight in fact!

Boobahs · 18/12/2018 14:17

Gammon done in the slow cooker, sautéed potatoes or jackets, peas Grin

BlackBeltInPresentWrapping · 18/12/2018 14:28

To put cauliflower cheese together with Sunday (roast) lunch is two good meals ruined, IMO. Just saying.

Bowchicawowow · 18/12/2018 14:32

I like Cauliflower cheese with a nice lamb chop.

BiddyPop · 18/12/2018 14:35

I usually do it with a lamb chop and some form of potato.

But often, if I have some lovely Cauli cheese leftover, I will make some roast potatoes and just serve them with the reheated cauli. No meat at all.

Some pork and some mashed potatoes is ok too.

Or a rasher.

For some reason, I am not as keen about chicken or beef with cauli cheese.

primoestate · 18/12/2018 14:40

I put bacon rashers over the top and bake in the oven as normal. Delicious

RandomWok · 18/12/2018 14:41

Gammon and roast potatoes. Please PM your address and what time is dinner? Wink I LOVE cauliflower cheese!!

RandomWok · 18/12/2018 14:43

@primoestate oh my goodness!! I think I may have dribbled. I am so doing that for dinner tomorrow!

Whyislarryhappy · 18/12/2018 14:45

Pork or lamb chops with some mash or roasties.
Rice and grilled tomato.
Pasta with extra cheese sauce.
Ragout.
Potatoes daphinoise (can't spell) could replace cream with milk so its not two creamy dishes

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 18/12/2018 14:46

Pulled pork. Mmmmmm

SoftBlocks · 18/12/2018 14:48

Brown rice and peas. It has to be brown rice.
