I've never thought of it as a 'tea' dish, that sounds odd but each to their own. I usually serve it as part of a main meal. Lovely with new potatoes and roast potatoes.

Grilled veg — courgette / carrots / peppers/ similar.

flissfloss65 · 17/12/2018 23:51

Fry up onion and bacon and add to cheese sauce. Pour over cauliflower and put under the grill with sliced tomatoes on top. Delicious.

I got my 29p cauliflower from Tesco so am having this tomorrow!

More of it and maybe a bit of bread for mopping. It's a meal on it's own.

Churchillian · 18/12/2018 00:12

My gran only served it with small triangles of toast. We have it with macaroni cheese as well.

clary · 18/12/2018 00:15

I put broccoli and pasta in with it then that's your tea. Might have grilled tomatoes if I can be bothered, or salad I you like (I do, DC usually don't).

Steam the leaves separately and toss them in some bacon fat or chilli oil as an accompanying green vegetable.

As with PP, some form of protein as a garnish tho' my mother always served it as a main meal (with the leaves as a side dish) with brown bread and butter. (I've been served it with garlic bread but much will depend on how well it goes with the cheese.) You can serve pasta with it if there's enough sauce or baked tomato to lubricate it.

It's a good topping for a Yorkshire Pudding if you need to stretch the cauliflower and cheese sauce. If you have chickpea/baisen flour, it's always good to make panisse as a similarly useful 'stretch' just because the crispy exterior is an enjoyable contrast:

Main meal by itself as far as I’m concerned (that would be a whole cauliflower though, with generous amount of sauce). And I’m not even a vegetarian.

ginghambox · 18/12/2018 00:36

Nothing, throw it in the bin.

pallisers · 18/12/2018 00:37

usually serve it with roast beef but for a weekday dinner I'd do slice of ham and boiled potatoes. I think it might work with roast sausages too,

xsquared · 18/12/2018 00:59

We served ours as a main dish with potato wedges/ roast potatoes and carrots and peas. Tastes good with bread too.

Chicken

Reading this thread is making me hungry. We serve cauli cheese on oatcakes or savoury pancakes, and with sausages if something more substantial is needed. The oatcakes are the traditional English hotcakes, similar to pancakes, and not the flatbreads similar to crackers or biscuits.

Roast the cauliflower in a tiny bit of oil, paprika, garlic, chilli & Parmesan cheese first.

Accompanied with chips, spaghetti/tagliatelle, roast potatoes and/or broccoli?

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 18/12/2018 01:38

Bacon, broccoli and roast potatoes

gruber · 18/12/2018 01:55

I would say Yorkshire Puddings. This is making me really hungry (up feeding a newborn).

Katedotness1963 · 18/12/2018 06:48

Sausages, chops, roast chicken, gammon steak.

Nightwatch999 · 18/12/2018 06:50

Chicken Kiev's go now, put Cottage Pie with it is gorgeous.

Santasshoe · 18/12/2018 06:53

As a child we just ate it on its own. I've never thought of putting anything with it. Haven't had it in years though so thanks for the idea for dinner tonight.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/12/2018 06:55

Thickly sliced ham, a jacket potato and peas.

Xiaoxiong · 18/12/2018 06:59

We have it relatively often as a main meal with a really sharply dressed green crunchy salad and garlic baguettes.

Sometimes I make a kind of fried breadcrumb and pancetta topping to sprinkle on top of the cauliflower, I saw it on a tv chef thing once and it works well.

Idontknowwhyinfrench · 18/12/2018 07:02

Sausages and jacket potatoes

keiratwiceknightly · 18/12/2018 07:04

Wedges and peas.

OddBoots · 18/12/2018 07:05

I love it with BBQ ribs but on its own is perfectly fine. :)
