Cats and Christmas trees, how long did yours last?

Our kitten thinks the tree is great, if we hadn't tied it to the handle on the window it would have been down in minutes! How long have yours lasted?

We're not allowed Christmas trees in this house. If we did, this would happen 😪

i put mine on top of a speaker behind the television so mine is safe they dont take any notice of it mind you when i was trying to decorate it i was at one side putting deccies on and my youngest cat whos 1 was at the other side trying to take the deccies back off again

Now they are older (4, 4 and 19 (!) the tree is safe...I just hear the odd rustle and the odd bauble making a getaway.

But the first year with the two kittens... dear God! Ophie ate the xmas lights..literally crunched through the plastic ends, and Obie simply bulldozed the tree every night (they are Maine Coons so by 4 months old they were about 15 pounds in weight!) They would wait until we went to bed and then about an hour later there would be a crash...

Our Christmas tree was imprisoned in the playpenXmas Grin

T'was easier to police the cat and child while they 'free-ranged'ShockGrin

My 2 aged 3 and 14 don't bother with the tree.
The tinsel and lights wrapped around the banister is a different matter tho!Hmm

goforkyourself · 17/12/2018 18:45

Our childhood cat used to eat the tinsel. It was great fun pulling said tinsel out of his bum two days later Xmas Envy

ShowOfHands · 17/12/2018 18:52

My 2 year old calico isn't remotely interested in the tree.

We expected disaster but our 1 year old cat only uses it as a place to hide under Smile

Ours is on the balcony. The tree, that is, not the cat. And I have a huge glass vase that I’ve put all the lovely baubles I can’t use in. It actually looks really pretty. We also have a twig tree with baubles on- I think the lack of piney smell has made that less tempting, as she’s had a couple of cursory swipes at it but otherwise left it alone.

First couple of days 8 month old kitten didn’t bother now it’s every bloody day. Dh just came in from walking the dog and I heard him ask the cat if she’d been messing with the tree again because she had been banished from the living room until I got the lights she’d pulled off back on.

The picture is where she likes to walk off the sideboard and in to the tree, she does it daily but comes back out again because she can’t get comfy.

We’re new cat owners and didn’t think through the tree thing at all! Our 6 month old kitten thinks it’s great that we’ve bought her a large prickly present covered in dangling toys. We’ve moved the decorations higher but she sees that as a challenge Grin

She put one of the lights in her mouth which gave her comedy glow-up cheeks, but I’m terrified she’ll bite through the wire and electrocute herself Confused

dementedpixie · 17/12/2018 21:05

Mine don't bother with it at all. They have slept under it and haven't touched any of the decorations

Iamdanish · 17/12/2018 21:25

We always have a tree reaching the ceiling, so we have mounted a hook in the ceiling and tie it to the top of the tree 😊. Otherwise it would tilt over and break all ornaments. We have 3 cats with individual interests re. Climbing the tree or bashing the ornaments. However Christmas tree playing normally occurs at night, if caught they all look very prudent and well-behaved 😂. And the hook decorates our ceiling all year 😄.

I love fairy lights. I want to have them all year round but I can’t because idiot cat likes to eat them 😤
