I really need a new pair of decent boots (last lot were charity shop bargains and now on their last legs, so to speak). For once I actually have some money in the bank and would like to but a pair that will last for a few years. But can I actually find anything I like? Can I heck as like! Can you lot come up with some suggestions please?
So requirements are: no heel (or very minimal); suitable for stomping about in all weathers; preferably not ankle boots; leather or nubuck, not shiny; if lace up then with zip too; colour darkish brown or black/charcoal. Nothing that looks too 'brand'y (eg screams 'Fly' etc). Any suggestions?

Clarks boots last for ever - almost. I have some flat dark brown leather ones that are fab, waterproof and 5 years on, look almost unworn.

If Jones the Bootmaker has a sale, they have good boots. I bought knee high brown leather flat ones and they’re wearing well. I’d only buy in the sale though.

Foxy good point, out Jones closed down last summer so they have dropped from my mind.
Heart of I'll have a squizz at Clarks, I've not found them to last that long, but I walk everywhere, rarely driving.

Might be terribly controversial, but hotter ‘mystery’ boots are great - ultra comfortable, mid calf and flat!

INeedNewShoes · 17/12/2018 15:22

I had some brilliant boots from Earth Spirit that were mid calf, leather, good structured foot. They lasted 3 years and I walked hundreds of miles in them in that time.

My most recent boots are from Moshulu. They're lovely but not quite as caring on the feet.

Hellohah · 17/12/2018 15:24

I'm going to disagree with PP, I bought Clark's last year, they are no longer waterproof. I was so disappointed.
And I don't just wear one pair of boots per year, I have about 6 pairs on rotation so it's not like I've worn them out.
The best wearing I've got/had are Dr Martens, without a doubt.

I love Fly boots, super comfortable, in all heel heights and colours.

I was having a look at dms today, they seemed either weirdly sparkly, shiny or very 'student' dms (I had a pair of cherry reds in 6th form). I'll have a look at heavenly feet and hotter. I suppose I was after something a bit edgier. As to Fly, do they all still look 'Fly' at first glance? (I don't know why this bothers me, but it does).

Have another look at dms. I've just bought a plain black pair, zips up both sides, no yellow stitching ... you'd not tell they were dms other than the quality. They're comfy, completely waterproof and I think they're Scandi stylish. I love them.

cleanhousewastedlife · 17/12/2018 18:06

2976 style w zips - almost last ones on their site when looking in a phone.

AviatorShades · 17/12/2018 18:11

My boots this year were from...ta-da! M&S! Just below knee, black, flat, pull on and so,so comfortable,

Liking the 'Lahiri' docs. I wonder if there will be a sale after Christmas?!

OP posts:
somersetsinger · 18/12/2018 22:02

The Lahiri DMs look like a pair that I've had for at least ten years. I've had the zip repaired on both boots now, but they are still waterproof and warm. I get compliments when I wear them.

I also quite like horse riding boots. They are generally sturdy and long lasting, plus they seem to be less expensive than 'fashion' boots. I wanted Chelsea boots a few years ago and bought myself some jodhpur boots. They are also still waterproof, with a good sole and have been comfortable from day one.

AudTheDeepMinded · 19/12/2018 14:48

Thanks @Somersetsinger, I'll take a look. (I've sung in Somerset, I wonder if our paths have crossed?)

I'll look out for you. We will know each other by our boots.
