I'm sitting here wide awake, have been since 4:45am when both DH and I were woken by the sound of something falling over and breaking downstairs.

Sounded like glass and it had to have hit something hard. The only room in the house with hard floor is the kitchen.

DH goes to investigate and says he can't see anything.

So I'm now wide awake just thinking and wondering what it could be ...

Not heard a peep since.

Maybe it was something just outside the house? Outside the kitchen door - if the sound came from that direction - assuming you have a hard patio?

Have you found it yet?

Any champagne or home made elderflower champagne? They can explode sometimes.
