I’m dreaming of an early 90s Christmas

I’m a child of the 80s (born in 77) so am usually nostalgic for those days at christmas time, but for some reason I’m suddenly craving the christmases of my teens:

Shopping with my mates in the newly opened shopping centre and going for a Burger King (FANCY compared to McDonalds back then because it was a novelty), deliberating over which Body Shop gift basket to buy my mum - white musk, dewberry or go rogue and get ananya?

Will my BFF buy me Tribe perfume for Christmas or a Purple Ronnie mug? When is the One Foot in the Grave Christmas special on? Will my dad let me have some Babycham? (Still a thing in the 90s) Can I convince my mum to put up the tacky foil garland decorations instead of all the new Victorian themed stuff that she bought last year when she decided it was all too dated?

Will the sound of christmas morning be a Now album or the Smash Hits compilation? There’s bound to be one of those in my stocking. And will my festive makeup look be created with Miners eyeshadow or the lurid M&S palette that everyone had back then? (Heather Shimmer lipsticks was non negotiable).

Looking forward to 'Noel's Christmas present' on Xmas day morning

alansleftfoot · 16/12/2018 19:46

I'm wearing Body shop Ananya just to be different

LikeLadyGodiva · 16/12/2018 19:46

93/94 I would get up extra early to to watch the Christmas day edition of the Big Breakfast (even though it wasn’t live )
Loved watching the horse of the year show in the run up to the big day (pony mad)
Paul Daniels magic show on Xmas eve with a curry.
Also the TOTP Christmas special.

TRIBE!!!! How could I have forgotten?! Loving this thread.

Life0fBrian · 16/12/2018 19:48

Oh and my big sister bought me a black crushed velvet hat with a rose. I was THE coolest amongst my friends wearing that and my flowery Tammy Girl dress with a rubbed body suit underneath and black suede boots. They wanted to BE me.

Haggisfish · 16/12/2018 19:48

Also loved the wizard type metal statues with crystals in them...

soup00 · 16/12/2018 19:51

Born the same year and have the same amazing memories!
Loved everything about it, the fashion and the make up. The TV guide with all the marks on so you didn't miss a thing! Happy days, would love to go back

NerrSnerr · 16/12/2018 19:52

I was born in 82.

I was a huge Let Loose fan. I was a member of their fan club (and also the Linford Christie and Colin Jackson fan club!) I loved dewberry body spray and felt so grown up when my sister bought me the blue Exclamation perfume. I was very sporty as a teen so of course had Adidas trackies. Never had the popper ones though.

toomanygreys · 16/12/2018 19:55

I have just got a waistcoat from Tammy girl and am now going to go to the body shop for some fuzzy peach and Oceanus perfume oil.
I got all my make up tips from J17 and some other tips from More Magazine which I had to hide from my mum and Dad 😂.

Used to love a walk round Athena and had the topless man and baby poster in my room.

Awww happy days.

ThistleAmore · 16/12/2018 20:02

79er here.

We had those ceiling garlands and I remember thinking they were really tacky at the time, but I kind of miss them now!

Worry not, however - apparently the hipsters are bringing them back. I predict they will be Insta-must haves next year...

soup00 · 16/12/2018 20:10

Oh @mumonashoestring I actually felt all emotional when I saw your post! That's exactly what I remember!!!

Numberonecook · 16/12/2018 20:15

I received a velvet top, I got black hipster flares to go with it and some kickers with heels for school. A T-shirt that changed colour when you —sweat— get warm and a floppy hat so I could look just like blossom.

In my stocking was Charlie body spray, shimmer lipstick, hair mascara, a body shop pen with an elephant on and bath pearls.

My mum would burn the turkey so we’d just have veg for lunch then an afternoon of eastenders followed by Christmas radio 1 (which I’d record in a tape)

Polkapjs · 16/12/2018 20:24

Well it was my actual branded Sony Walkman and the Rocky Horror Show soundtrack on it and a new pink towelling dressing gown that utterly made my year. I didn’t know I was getting it and felt so special. I remember buying wicker baskets of peach toiletries as gifts and going out drinking Christmas Eve very early 90s with tinsel stolen from pubs around my neck. My happiest times

I remember that Boots ‘elements’ stuff WeepingWillows - my best friends mum was manager of the Boots and we got 10% off! It was great!

Also LOVED the body shop: I still do like some of their stuff but Crabtree and Evelyn and neals yard is nicer!

I had a mood ring too Xmas Smile

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 16/12/2018 20:34

I got some soaps from Avon one year that were in a box and they were pink shells (The curvy ones!) I loved them and thought they were the height of sophistication. I also had a yellow waterproof Walkman one year that I used to death, used to listen to 'Walking on Broken Glass' in the bath on loop.

Agree with earlier poster about the River Island decoupage bags for PE - only narrowly beaten by a Bennetton duffle style drawstring bag. Also loved my DASH tracksuit.

FancyRibbon · 16/12/2018 20:35

Not RTFT but Christmas Top of the Pops was the highlight of the day in the 90s. For some reason my mum never got this and so every year we argued because no one had ever eaten yet and all of us kids just wanted to leave the table immediately to watch telly.. Grin

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 16/12/2018 20:36

And the year I fit my first cacharel bra!! The lovely one with the roses on it Smile

SymbollocksInteractionism · 16/12/2018 20:38

Aw I'd LOVE to go back to the 90s for a day! Body suits, ski pants with the stirrups over the heel of river island boots. Permed hair, satin baby doll dresses with short fluffy cardi. Body shop soaps and bath pearls in my stocking. No worries and drinking my parents diamond white and diamond blush 😁

FancyRibbon · 16/12/2018 20:43

By the way if I remember after Xmas... I am going to start a thread about 90s New Years’ Eves. They were fucking amazing. Smile

Titsywoo · 16/12/2018 21:01

Oh my gosh reading back through the posts and seeing Lush has made me remember the Christmas Cosmetics to Go catalogue! God I loved that stuff - so wacky! Mini choc chip facemask anyone? Grin

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 16/12/2018 21:01

I was born in 76. Loved the Christmas’s of late 80’s and early 90’s. most memorable though is getting a portable CD player but no CDs for it and had to wait days to be able to go and buy them with my Woolworths or hmv voucher.

Does anyone remember those black canvas shoes with chunky soles and rubber toes? I loved those wore mine until they literally fell apart.

@NancyDonahue we must live near by as Blackbush was a big treat we always went there at Christmas for my mum to buy decorations and wrapping paper. And my brother who is 6years younger than me usually got a toy from there that would fall apart and expose dangerous parts. I actually missed Blacbushe when I moved up north.

tiredvommachine · 16/12/2018 21:06

Born 76 and adoring this thread!

Reading my festive edition of Pony magazine and H&P mag in which the fictional story would involve a girl doing something nice for an elderly neighbour and being left money in her will, which enabled her to buy her favourite riding school pony who had just been put up for sale...I ached and ached for a pony (still do!).

Chalky bath cubes and scented soap sets, sweater shop jumper, new Blur album and a CD player.

My mother force feeding us pretty much from dawn until dusk with all of the special food items myself and my brothers had been banned from eating until the Big Day and feeling sick well before Christmas dinner was served.

Trying to scrunch my poker straight hair was never a good look, likewise using Toners wash in hair dye on my dark brown hair.. didn't even make a dent in the colouring Hmm

NerrSnerr · 16/12/2018 21:41

I have also just remembered the Body Shop animal soaps. The mountain gorilla smelled of aniseed.
