What games console for a 6 year old?

Ds has never asked for any particular thing for Xmas before but has suddenly asked for a Nintendo switch or x box for Christmas. I haven’t decided whether to get him one yet as we do have another present but that could wait until his birthday in April (it’s a new bike so possibly better to wait till the spring anyway...?!) but I have no idea what’s best to buy! He would like driving games and likes minecraft on the iPad. Tempted by the switch as it can be used out and about as well as at home but just have no idea! Any suggestions gratefully received Smile

I think a switch is best for that age group

That’s what I was thinking... I like the portability of it...

My wee boy will be 6 in February and we have got him a Switch for Christmas - likes he idea that it is easily portable and they sometimes play Mario Kart on another console at the after school club, but could buy that as a Seitcg game too - am hoping his big cousin will join in! Also like the idea of being able to get him the Labo add ins as he loves Lego and build things so am sure next year that would be a big hit!

My youngest is just 6 and is having a switch this year.

If you like the portability then get the switch.

Get a case for it as well.

DH is going to take some persuading Grin but I think he’d secretly like it too Grin can it be played on any telly?

I'd go back a generation and try and grab a second hand Nintendo Wii U personally. The switch is amazing but the games are hugely expensive. There is a limited selection as the console is new and most are £40-£50 each.

The Wii U on the other hand will play Wii and Wii U games giving you a massive selection to chose from including a huge range of mario games, Pokemon games etc. Most will be less than £10 so you can get much more for your money. You can also get Minecraft and many other kids games. Nintendo make great kids consoles.

At 6 he's unlikely to know one mario game from another. The Wii U also has a big game pad which you can play (some) games on, although it needs to be in range of the console. It also has more games which require movement which my 6 year old absolutely loved (and still loves now at 8)

If he plays it a lot you can upgrade to a switch later down the line when there are more games out and they are cheaper. We have a switch but the Wii U gets far more play time as the switch game supply is very limited due to availability and cost!

Yes, they'll work on any telly with an HDMI socket (which is all of them under ten years old).

But I'd go for a Wii or Wii U, like HotChocolate says. Switches are a bit expensive and delicate for a six year old.

We’ve just bought a switch for 9yr old and 5yr old as joint. They LOVE it! It’s the 1st console they’ve ever had and there are enough games imo to keep them entertained.
