Would a non-musical fan like Matilda?

I don't know what to get my mum for Christmas and then had a fit of inspiration and thought I'll by tickets for a show because she loves music (especially Motown/Diana Ross etc).

The Motown show has only gone and ended... but I saw Matilda advertised and I've heard such good things.

If she likes old school dancing, i cannot recommend 42nd street enough, its just fabulous.
Each to their own, but I thought Matilda was spectacularly shit. I would have walked out had dd (9) not fallen asleep.

I loved Matilda the musical but I have a big emotional connection to the book. I don’t think I’d have really appreciated it otherwise.

VersaceMcClatchey · 15/12/2018 20:07

Hmmm.

What about the Jersey Boys?

We went to see Thriller the Michael Jackson musical now that was absolute fantastic. The singers were incredible as were the dancers. Hit after hit including the Motown stuff. It’s still touring now.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/12/2018 20:12

Dh has never seen a musical before though he does like music in general saw it and raves about it. Completely loved it!

SwedishEdith · 15/12/2018 20:13

I was bought Jersey Boys tickets as a joint birthday present. Both of us are not musical fans but we quite enjoyed it because the songs are great. And I was just grateful to get a present.

Enidblyton1 · 15/12/2018 20:13

Impossible to say. I think Matilda the Musical is brilliant, but it’s not exactly Motown.
I remember reading a thread on here before about Matilda the Musical and most of the people who replied thought it was excellent. However, there were a few people who absolutely hated it.

Enidblyton1 · 15/12/2018 20:14

Agree with pp, Thriller might be a better bet

Montsti · 15/12/2018 20:15

I thought Matilda was brilliant and I don’t like musicals...but I’ve heard from lots of people that School of Rock is even better!

VersaceMcClatchey · 15/12/2018 20:17

Oh god I'm second guessing myself now. She is not a fan of Michael Jackson so Thriller is out.

Between the Jersey Boys and Matilda...

I’d go with Jersey Boys. Matilda is a bit of a marmite one, it’s quite dark, she won’t know any of the songs.

retainertrainer · 15/12/2018 20:21

Does she happen to like Russell Watson and Aled Jones? They’re touring together,I’ve got my mum and dad tickets for Christmas. Not my idea of fun but they’ll love it.

LizzieSiddal · 15/12/2018 20:23

Matilda and Jersey Boys are my two favourite musicals. As your mum loves music, I’d go for Jesery Boys as she’ll know all the songs.

LizzieSiddal · 15/12/2018 20:24

And also the Jersy Boys is the same era as Motown.

Discobabe98 · 15/12/2018 20:33

Could be way out here, but Kinky Boots is brilliant. The music and costumes are great and the storyline is fun. My mum (50) and I (20) have both seen it twice and loved it. It was my mum’s Christmas present to my grandma (75) she saw it last month and absolutely adored it too, she sent me this email😭

Would a non-musical fan like Matilda?
VersaceMcClatchey · 15/12/2018 20:34

I think I'll go for Jersey Boys, thanks everyone. Fingers crossed she likes it!

Discobabe98 · 15/12/2018 20:36

I’ve seen Jersey boys and Matilda as well. Preferred Matilda by a fair bit but your mother would hopefully like Jersey Boys if she likes older music Smile

PoutySprout · 15/12/2018 20:37

Saw Matilda for the second time this week. It’s utterly stunning. DH hates musicals normally but absolutely loved that one. We sang “telly” all the way home in the car!

Toomanycats99 · 15/12/2018 20:41

If tickets haven't sold out would she like the hugh jackman tour - it's songs from musicals I think.

We have just come back from seeing Matilda this afternoon. I liked it but wasn't blown away (kids loved it) and if you didn't know the story a bit I am not sure how engaged you would get?

DaisyDreaming · 15/12/2018 20:52

My mum would hate Matilda, it’s good but Matilda’s parents are so OTT, more like pantomime than musical and beyond annoying

PoutySprout · 15/12/2018 21:06

Matilda’s parents are so OTT

Not dissimilar to several I’ve encountered at school Christmas concerts this week!

TowerRingInferno · 15/12/2018 21:10

I loved it and normally detest musicals! Very different to Diana Ross/Motown music though.

Amaaboutthis · 15/12/2018 21:15

Matilda is just mind blowing. I loved every second of it

Dragonlight · 15/12/2018 21:23

Loved Matilda!
Also loved Jersey Boys
Mamma Mia is another wonderful musical if you like Abba. Just a fun, light hearted show that has everyone up and dancing and It's encouraged!

FreshEyre · 15/12/2018 21:27

Depends where you live but 'Buddy' is still touring and has some dates next year.
