Need Mental Simulation

Hello everyone,

I have heard this forum is very good helping with suggestions for various problems.

I am 57 year old man, and recently had two stays in hospital for major surgery on my left leg, including three toe amputations and a femoral bypass. I live on my own so have no ongoing company. To combat mental boredom and depression, I found playing an online game helped significantly, but to play that I need to sit up (I can't play it in bed, I tried). Now sitting for more than about 90 minutes causes the leg to swell significantly, and I am under orders to lie down and elevate the leg.

I can read to an extent, watching television or DVDs does not work for me, so I need something mentally stimulating to do in bed. I am not stupid, so it needs to be moderately taxing. I have thought of adult colouring books, learning conjuring tricks, and one nurse suggested knitting. All are possibilities, but do not really grab me enough to get me from sitting playing the online game for less time.

Just wondered if any of you had some ideas?

Many thanks.

Audio books?
Redesigning something you can see from where you are? A more hygienic curtain? A less wasteful way to run a hospital? Better signage for the hospital (always difficult to find your way around...think underground map or coloured lines to follow as you walk)...

Design your own game then suggest it to an app designer...

If you're not already into podcasts - get yourself into podcasts. Download a podcast app on your phone, and look for ones in a subject that fascinates you. There's a podcast section on MN where you might find some ideas.

Try out the free trial period of Great Courses Plus to watch lectures, or find a completely free service. I'm sure there are tons just on YouTube. Or try some free online courses, such as www.futurelearn.com/ .
