Does anyone else remember the orchestra wearing masks?

OK, I'm pretty sure I didn't dream this. It would have been late 80s, maybe early 90s. On a few different programmes I saw an orchestra playing this particular piece of dramatic music, but they were all wearing masks. I think the masks were completely featureless but they may have been dressed in Baroque-style outfits. Does anyone remember this at all? What was it all about?

Not a dream! I only rediscovered this last year after thinking it was a nightmare I had as a kid.

All aboard the nostalgia train, choo choo...

I was crazy about Rondo Veneziano!

I imagined that they were only known to sophisticated, stylish me, in reality, a suburban 8 year old.

However, I saw them performing on a repeat of 3 2 1 recently and realised that they couldn't have been as niche and special as I'd have liked to imagine!

Rondo Veneziano?

Oh wow. I remembered the music better than I realised! They were supposed be robots? That passed me by.

Yes I remember this, vaguely

Used as the theme for "Meg Mortimer of Crossroads fame", when she left. Also used for a time as the "ATV" sig. tune.
