Mardy sadly Stacie breeds will not be banned, they are actually thinking of dropping other bans on pit bull type breeds. Any dog is capable of killing a cat, I know a huskie who ate a cat, I know a lurched who are 2 kittens, they are dogs and many breeds were originally breed to hunt small furries. My Staff loves my cat, they sleep together and if the cat goes missing my staff cries, some dogs just don’t like cats mainly because they are not used to them and instinct tells them to chase or kill them.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/12/2018 11:46

No matter what breed of dog you have, no matter how loving and soft they are, just never, ever leave your baby or young child alone with it, not for one second.

This couples lives are ruined now. For what? Complacency and thinking the unthinkable would never happen.

Just looked at this baby's photos and he was absolutely beautiful. A tragedy that should never have happened.

brizzledrizzle · 14/12/2018 11:47

Jesus Christ. That poor baby. Why on earth do people think it's ok to keep staffordshire bull terriers as pets, especially round their children?

Just two weeks old and his life was ruined by selfish parents.

The fact that one of the dogs didn’t move during the incident does not convince me that Staffies are not a dangerous animal to have around children.

totallycluelessoverhere · 14/12/2018 11:49

Well said ewits

Nesssie · 14/12/2018 11:50

Why on earth do people think it's ok to keep staffordshire bull terriers as pets, especially round their children? Because people are sensible and realise that no dog should be left unattended around children no matter the breed. Because thousands of staffies are gentle loving family pets who have never put a foot wrong.

PaPica · 14/12/2018 11:50

There is no need for name calling Nessie. You have your opinion. I have mine. No need to call someone uneducated

You obviously are uneducated about the matter at hand, though.

PaPica · 14/12/2018 11:52

Why on earth do people think it's ok to keep staffordshire bull terriers as pets, especially round their children?

Because it is ok to keep staffordshire bull terriers as pets, and it is ok to have them around children, assuming they're properly supervised, as all dogs should be around children. The parents in this case were arrested for neglect, so I'm assuming they weren't supervising the situation. The breed is irrelevant.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 14/12/2018 11:54

Are people seriously claiming that CATS cause as many fatal attacks as dogs????

brizzledrizzle · 14/12/2018 11:55

Because people are sensible and realise that no dog should be left unattended around children no matter the breed. Because thousands of staffies are gentle loving family pets who have never put a foot wrong.

People can be as 'sensible' as they like but if they have a dog from a dangerous breed then they aren't being sensible; they are being irresponsible. There are plenty of dog breeds out there who not considered dangerous, though of course sensible dog owners would keep them away from children when unattended.

itsaboojum · 14/12/2018 11:56

Very sad.

Just waiting for all the usual victim-blaming posts, how it’s down to a "tiny minority" of "irresponsible" owners, how it’s never the dog's fault, blah blah etc etc.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 14/12/2018 11:56

Staffs aren't considered a dangerous breed.

HTH.

Lovemusic33 · 14/12/2018 11:58

Brizz you sound really clued up (not), staffies are not dangerous dogs, well no more dangerous than other breeds, not sure where you get your info from?

brizzledrizzle · 14/12/2018 11:59

so I'm assuming they weren't supervising the situation. The breed is irrelevant.

How is the breed irrelevant? It's a breed known to be dangerous and there have been other cases of them attacking, seriously injuring and killing children.

MamaLovesMango · 14/12/2018 11:59

MN really needs a facepalm emoji....

There are pros and cons to having dogs, of any breed, around children. SBTs are the latest breed to go through the ‘OMG they should be banned’ phase. 20 years ago it was German shepherds (which I remember well because we had one!). Jack Russells have also gone through it fairly recently. If you think this is a problem solely connected with SBTs, I invite you to do a bit of reading around the subject. You will find that ALL dogs are capable of causing injury or fatality and that if you own an animal you need to exercise responsibility in your ownership.

As an aside, to whichever PP referenced to rejoining centres being overrun by SBTs, it’s true and it’s true because of overbreeding of a once popular breed (much like French Bulldogs are now) and the breeding falling out of favour because of many of the attitudes displayed on this thread and the dogs being passed off to rehoming centres. Walk into a rehoming centre and ask them if you think I’m wrong.

AlwaysHangry · 14/12/2018 12:00

Odfod on the anti Stafford brigade I've got a staffer and she wonderful with my daughter I would never leave any dog alone with a child it's utterly ridiculous to think you can

NameChangeToAvoidBeingFound · 14/12/2018 12:00

There is no such thing as a bad dog. It's poor ownership and people getting dogs who refuse to train or take care of them appropriately. Even the best trained animal should never be left alone with a baby or child.

Rather than banning breeds they should bring back licencing for pet owners and independent breeding. The entire dog breeding thing needs to be regulated, for the dogs and the public's sakes. Bring back dog wardens and check only allow people who are licenses and capable of taking care of the dogs. Make them follow the guidelines that those adopting from a shelter follow.

It's unspeakably sad for the baby though. It's devastating.

That articles for you brizzle btw.

EwItsAHooman · 14/12/2018 12:03

Are people seriously claiming that CATS cause as many fatal attacks as dogs????

Where has anyone claimed that? People have simply pointed out that any animal, regardless of species, is capable of inflicting harm and basic safety measures should be observed.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 14/12/2018 12:04

It's a breed known to be dangerous

Again, no it isn't.

From the Kennel Club:

"Three examples of breeds that can be particularly suited to families with children, because of their loyal and affectionate nature, are the Labrador, Boxer and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, however there are many more that are particularly good with children"

brizzledrizzle · 14/12/2018 12:05

have a look here a third of all fatal dog attacks were by Staffordshire. More than pit bulls.

and this

eddiemairswife · 14/12/2018 12:06

Has a cat ever killed a baby?

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 14/12/2018 12:08

Brizzle - have you even read that article? 😂 Plus it's pretty hard for a pit bull to kill in this country, seeing as they're a banned breed.

Seriously clueless.

Lovemusic33 · 14/12/2018 12:09

13.5% of attacks are by labradors
8% Bull terrier breeds (includes pit bull types, EBT, SBT)

So statistically the most likely to attack is a Labrador which has the most attacks in the uk, 3rd is German Shepard’s.

None of the above breeds are classed as dangerous, they happen to be the most popular breeds meaning there are more of them than other breeds therefor there are more attacks recorded.
