Those with older teens, how many of you would just hand over your debit card for a night in the pub?

Just been having a chat with one of my teens (nearly 18). She's off out tonight, says she's barely got any money and can I lend her some - she has a part time job, which only pays £5 an hour so doesn't earn a lot.

I queried how some of her friends manage to go out so much when at least three of them have never had a job - she said two of them have parents who just hand their debit card over and they use it in the pub, cabs, a club if they go onto one ……..

I'm stunned by this!! Thought I'd do a MN survey Grin

What??! NOBODY gets my card!

Fabellini · 14/12/2018 09:10

Hahahahaha....No.

Yulebealrite · 14/12/2018 09:11

Mine are good kids and trustworthy but no I wouldn't dream of doing this.

GhostSauce · 14/12/2018 09:13

She's full of shit.

MaidenMotherCrone · 14/12/2018 09:13

I do give mine my card but definitely not for a night out. Perish the thought.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 14/12/2018 09:14

Nope.

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/12/2018 09:15

No. Nu-uuh. Nope.

starryeyed19 · 14/12/2018 09:15

Fucking hell, no way. I might transfer some money into an account I don't use often and give her/him the debit card for that but unrestricted access to all my money?

You've got to be kidding

derekthe1adyhamster · 14/12/2018 09:16

Fuck no!

StylishMummy · 14/12/2018 09:16

My dad gave me his card for his 'second' account, which may have a few hundred £, but I completely respected him and never took the piss. Maybe £30 for a night out and £10-15 on cab home if required

TooTrueToBeGood · 14/12/2018 09:19

I don't even give my cards to my wife and I'd give her both my kidneys if she needed them. It's a breach of the banks TOS. If they found out, not only would they not be liable for any frauds/losses during that instance of sharing, they could refuse liability for any prior or future frauds/losses on the basis that you could not be trusted to keep your card or PIN secure.

If my kids need money I transfer by online banking or give them cash.

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/12/2018 09:23

Well if that's true then their parents are being a bit daft and if there was fraud they might struggle to get their money back as allowing someone else to use the card is probably against the account terms.

Do they give the pin too, in case they have to enter it - I thought you had to put the pin in every so often with contactless?

But I find it a bit odd how many people seem to actually use debit cards and use the one for the same account that their direct debits come out of because that just seems to be asking to get into a mess unless you have loads of extra money in the account.

What if you or a fraudster spends money that is needed for direct debits? Seems much easier to spend on a card linked to a separate account, but in practice, use a credit card so you get cashback and consumer protection and just treat the monthly bill like every other direct debit.

Christmasgone2018 · 14/12/2018 09:25

Ha ha ha ha

DaedricLordSlayer · 14/12/2018 09:27

what? err no. If they need money I'll put some in their account and they can use their card.

Loopytiles · 14/12/2018 09:27

She’s either lying or the friends’ parents are idiots.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 14/12/2018 09:27

Nope. Before he got his own card and income I would give him my card to go shopping but not out on the town, it is too much of a risk that others can take advantage especially if he was a bit pissed.

I would, however, give him money for a night out in cash. £20 or so. The sneaky little bugger used to sometimes be given money by DH as well and not mention it so he would end up with more...

AuntieStella · 14/12/2018 09:31

Nope, not a chance.

Pocket money goes by direct debit to their account. If I top up for special spending, then I either give them cash or do a transfer.

Cash might be better if it's for a night out - because then when it runs out they have to stop drinking. Just swiping can lead to a fair amount of over-consumption, so not getting into the habit when young is a small protective measure.

violeticecream · 14/12/2018 09:36

No way! I wouldn't have a penny left! Ds 18 reckons that if in weatherspoons his friends parents order big rounds of drinks online and send to their table. I certainly don't do that either!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2018 09:38

Unusually unanimous for MN!

She wasn't asking me to give her my card - just explaining what others do - so I don't see the point of her lying about it. Unless she was after the sympathy vote for more cash.

It really is bizarre isn't it, and why would they ever get themselves a minimum wage part time job if they can just flash their parents card, getting a round or three in.

I would dread to think what my DD would spend …. she gets rather generous after a few Grin, she'd certainly make a lot of new friends!

I've heard of that Violet - in Wetherspoons.

One of my daughters friends has a parental credit card for university but I don’t know many others who do so. I’ve occaisionally given mine my card to get cash out or go shopping but not for nights out in case they lost it.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2018 09:40

Nothing to do with wealth either - even if I had millions I wouldn't do that.

OP posts:
timeisnotaline · 14/12/2018 09:40

Nope. I expect them to earn money they will spend on drinks etc.

Camomila · 14/12/2018 09:41

My parents wouldn’t have ever given me their card but they would always give me 20£ for the taxi home. Actually DM would probably still do it now if I said I was getting a night bus!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2018 09:41

Yes I've given my card for a bit of petrol or a starbucks …. a night on the town is completely different though I think.
