Those with older teens, how many of you would just hand over your debit card for a night in the pub?

Just been having a chat with one of my teens (nearly 18). She's off out tonight, says she's barely got any money and can I lend her some - she has a part time job, which only pays £5 an hour so doesn't earn a lot.

I queried how some of her friends manage to go out so much when at least three of them have never had a job - she said two of them have parents who just hand their debit card over and they use it in the pub, cabs, a club if they go onto one ……..

I'm stunned by this!! Thought I'd do a MN survey Grin

DS has my card for my second account, which has a few grand in it. He hasn't taken the p*, but then he's not a drinker or a party boy. It is for emergencies.

NC4Now · 14/12/2018 09:44

Haha! That’s hilarious. No, of course not.
He does have a taxi app linked to my card, but it’s a fiver max to get home, and he’s never used it.

PortiaCastis · 14/12/2018 09:45

Nope I'm not paying for her or her mates to get rat arsed

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/12/2018 09:46

No I bloody well would not!
I've a 17yr old and I'll sometimes give her money, or buy some drinks for at home, but hand over my card, ha.

hotchocy · 14/12/2018 11:25

I had a secondary card for my dads account to use from when I was 14. He was away a lot and I obviously would need things while he was gone and as I grew up it was easier than asking for cash. I was sensible though and worked hard and he would have given me money for a night out if I was short so just trusted me to spend what I needed. I'm now 31 with a good job, a DH and a child of my own but he still makes sure I have this card 'just in case'.

CMOTDibbler · 14/12/2018 11:40

From when I was 13 I had a monthly allowance from my parents (and a job) and that was it - I can't remember ever asking for money or getting it given to me from that point on. The only thing my parents paid for was school uniform and everyday shoes, and I could put toiletries/tights in the shopping trolley during a shop.
DS is only 12, but has his own bank account with a debit card and a pocket money paid monthly. There's no way I'd be giving him money to go out when he's older!

bigbluebus · 14/12/2018 11:55

Good grief no! I never give my card to anyone - not even DH to whom I've been married for 30 years. I don't see the need. I can give DS cash if he needs some or I can transfer money into his own bank account within minutes from my phone so he can use his own card. It may have something to do with working in a bank in a former life though.

I went to school 40 years ago with a girl who used to bring her father's cheque book (with signed cheques) and bank card to school and go shopping for clothes in town after school. I went to the local comprehensive not some posh private school!

AviatorShades · 14/12/2018 11:59

What fresh madness is this?Shock

No, never. Can't be more definite than thatGrin

Witchend · 14/12/2018 11:59

Got to be joking!

However they can get debit cards from about age 13yo so she may be thinking they are borrowing them from parents when really they're their own.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/12/2018 12:02

Ds 18 reckons that if in weatherspoons his friends parents order big rounds of drinks online and send to their table

My DS drinks in The Spoons (as they call it ) I am hiding this gem from him Grin.
He can get ApplePay

Oblomov18 · 14/12/2018 12:46

This isn't/can't be true. Why would a parent do this? No need.
As BigBlue says, you either hand over cash, or transfer money into their account from your phone.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/12/2018 12:58

Absolutely not. I don't think my DD would abuse my card but it would just seem so wrong. I am happy to transfer her some money if needed but not give her my card.

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 14/12/2018 13:02

I really truly trust my teens but it would be far to easy to overspend with a debit card in a pub once the alcohol starts flowing.

So no.

But happily for a shopping trip with a pre agreed budget. Though my teens are far richer than me...

SushiMonster · 14/12/2018 13:13

Are you kidding?

How bloody stupid.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 14/12/2018 15:45

I smell 💩💩

AndThereSaw · 14/12/2018 15:54

I'll pay for a round in Spoons or a takeaway delivery for eldest or 2nd SD at Uni. I don't think I could hand over my card with no thought to the consequences though.
Maybe if I had a low limit credit card? Or could it be debits on the kid's own accounts where an allowance is paid?
My 14YO has a debit card of her own.

Theoryofmould · 14/12/2018 16:22

She's having a laugh. I'd not trust my usually extremely sensible dd with my debit card whilst she's under the influence of vodka. Hell would have to freeze over first Grin

MayFayner · 14/12/2018 16:27

DD also frequents “Spoons” 🙄

No, I do give her my card... wtf.

She has a part-time job and does babysitting.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2018 16:27

I know one of the mums, might ask her when I see her.

My teen just tried to tell me that all of his friends' parents are fine with them going away to a hotel together (mixed sex group, all 16, no parents present) and I'm the only one who said no.

I didn't believe that and I don't believe that people hand over their debit cards to teens who will be drinking. Although I could believe that the friends have said this, without it ever having happened.

Theoryofmould · 14/12/2018 16:41

Spoons is popular because after they've had pre's, it's off to Spoons for getting a little drunk before heading to a club where drinks are so expensive. Even my snob of a dd about most things will happily go into any Spoons for its cheapness Hmm

irnbruforlife · 14/12/2018 17:09

Is this like the adult version of 'but all the other kids in my class went to Disneyland for their holidays' 😂 don't believe for a second any teen had free range on their parents debit card for a night out.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2018 17:20

Pres 😂😂. DD just asked for a gin and tonic while she’s getting ready ..... err no it’s 4.30!!

Not a snowballs chance in hell

Mitzimaybe · 14/12/2018 17:28

She's not even legal to drink!
