My DB has requested 'alcohol' for his main Christmas gift. I want get something naice and unusual as it's for Christmas...I drink a lot of wine but don't know much about port or dessert wine but know he likes it... (although I fucking love a sweet sherry, due a comeback I tell you)
Any recommendations please? Budget £40ish...if I buy from somewhere like Fortnum & Mason will it actually be any nicer? Or just paying for the name?

Sauternes is a safe bet.

If you can get a hold of a Canadian Ice Wine you won't be disappointed
Magic stuff 🍷

Don't bother with f&m buy a decent one somewhere else, you'll get more (quality) for your money.

For dessert wine, brown brothers is cheap but nice, very sweet though.

For port, we like Ramos pinto rp10.

Canadian Ice Wine from Lidl is an annual treat. They have 2 this year.

Do you want £££ on a single bottle or quantity?

Sauternes is always lovely, you can spend as much as you like but even the cheap ones are nice.

I have had a sip of some eye-wateringly pricey Tokajis - price really does count here though and cheap can be nasty.

Thanks everyone- I was thinking quality over quantity for sure. The sauternes or the Canadian Ice wine sound good. Perhaps I'll get a bottle of one of those two and a port as well. Off to google!

Me again- Ice wine fans, is it worth spending £50 on 'Inniskillin Gold Vidal' do you know? Reviews are good?

It was a Vidal we had last year (from Costco) but not as expensive as that - maybe a different type, gorgeous.

Monbazillac DOC dessert wine is very highly regarded - and really quite cheap. Can be bought in some supermarkets.
