What did we do with all that spare time?
I ask as she hums youtube nursery ryhmes
I haven't a clue, but it must have been great, to be free from exhaustaion at quarter past eight
Endless hours to kill, with hobbies and rest
Now I'd kill for an hour, an hour at best
You see, we promised ourselves when all this began, to make time for each other with naively laid plans
But try as we might, time runs away, hour by hour, day by day
Unburdened by love I envy those friends, manically hectic or at lazy loose ends
Last minute deals and nights on the town Recovering with box sets and warm dressing gowns
Not shackled by constant and fervent demands, relentlessly feeding from out of our hands
Course, it wouldn't be fair to say romance is dead, but for certain it's taken a crack on the head
That passionate blaze at the start of our reign, now flickers and flutters, more muted and tame
But where flames once resided embers take hold, and I know with those embers we'll never grow cold
Don't get me wrong most days I am glad, to be summoned by angels who call me their Dad
But God give me strength on those devilish days, when we struggle to cope with their latest phase
As fatigue and its sidekick impatience appear, we turn on each other with a snap and a sneer
The bonds that we built start to fracture and break, pushed to the limit of what we can take
But just as my thoughts turn to solemn self doubt, I'm drawn down the hall by exuberant shouts
With a head on each shoulder all huddled up tight, you read them a story by favoured night light
And it's then that I know that it's worth all the while, you look up from the book with a satisfied smile
One day, when the kids are all grown and are missed, we'll do all the things that are paused on our list
Until then we will love and we'll try and we'll give, to the wonderful life we're so lucky to live
