What to put in a notice of resignation?

DH is handing in his notice first thing on Monday morning. Only problem is, neither of us know what to put in it! He's been in this job for almost 12yrs, since he was 17 so he's never had to write one before. I have but mine was to say I wouldn't be returning after my maternity leave ended.

He can't wait to leave, the company have been utterly shit these past couple of years and he's so fed up.

So what should he write?

Dear Boss

I am writing to give formal notice of my resignation from (company). My intended date of leaving will be (date + notice period).

(Optional) I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you have given me during my employment with (company).

Please let me know if there is any further information you require.

Yours sincerely

Your DH

They have really good examples online, I put in mine that I appreciated the experience they gave me and that sadly I will be leaving, I wouldn’t recommend putting a reason! After 12 years being there tell him not to brownnose in the letter, just be factual and straight to the point. My manager has always said how he hated employees that basically wrote a love song or sob story in their resignation lol he just appreciates a thank you and a leaving date.

Valenta's letter is good.
Keep it simple!

Agree with Valenta’s wording, it’s concise and professional.

Thank you Valenta that seems perfect, we'll use that!

I wrote pretty much what Valenta wrote when I handed in my notice in February.

DH has to give 5 days notice, so if he hands it in on Monday that means his leaving day would be Friday, BUT the company shuts down for Christmas on Thursday, so how does that work? Confused

If it is Thursday just say something like,

... My intended date of leaving will be ..... as per my contract. As the offices/company will not be trading on ... I would really appreciate it if you could deem it that ... would be my last day of work.

I wouldn't put "really appreciate" as that implies they have a choice.

I'd say "I will be leaving on Friday 20th December, giving 5 days notice as per my contract. As the offices/company will not be trading on Friday 20th December,my last working day will be Thursday 19 December."
