Aeropress or cafetier??

My mum has asked what we'd like for Xmas and I'm thinking asking her for a coffee thingy.

Has anyone got an aeropress and a cafetier / French press? Which would you go for please??

Depends how many cups you need to make at a time. Aeropress is one cup at a time, cafetieres can make several. Aeropress makes much nicer coffee IMO.

Aeropress!

Get a proper Bodum grinder too though. And decent beans. There's no point if you're buying ground coffee from the supermarket.

Aeropress has been a coffee game changer for me! I love it more than my DC some days. A cafetière is good for more than 1 cup, but aeropress is so quick you could just use it to make a few cups pretty easily anyway. Did I mention I love it?

PlaymobilPirate · 12/12/2018 07:56

Wow! I'd never even heard if them until yesterday!

I've got an aeropress at work (as they only have instant coffee Confused), but I find it really really hard to push in (to the point where my cup once shot across the room spilling coffee everywhere), am I doing it wrong?

Aeropress every day of the week. I don’t drink coffee but bought one for DH about 6/7 years ago and it is the best gift I have every given him. It has also spawned many other purchases as every friend who comes in the house or comes to stay with us falls in love with it and ends up buying one for themselves too. My mum says the one we bought her about 5 years ago has literally changed her life because she used to make a cafetière and just keep reheating the coffee through the day, whereas now she just uses the aeropress and gets an amazing cup fresh each time with zero effort.

Are you wetting the seal on the plunger before you begin RealJudas? If not then that will definitely make all the difference. I do recall that when DH first got his I was scared to push too hard but we got used to it pretty quickly. (There is also a method which is upside down which might work for you - look it up and you’ll find YouTube videos explaining it.)

MeetOnTheSIedge · 12/12/2018 08:10

I use the upsidedown method, its much easier IMO

aldgadgie · 12/12/2018 08:15

Realjudas are you making sure you insert the press in at an angle? I find it makes all the difference. Aero press coffee is the absolute best and the satisfaction of the ‘coffee cake’ going into the bin!

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 12/12/2018 08:18

Aero press is too much faff for me. Cafetière makes good coffee - although I prefer a slightly coarser grind than most ground coffees for the cafetière.

sackrifice · 12/12/2018 08:20

Aeropress. Use the upside down method...I nevet used any other method...and wet the plunger before you assemble it.

Ours comes on every trip and holiday with us.

Ooh it’s called a Coffee Puck in this house aldgadgie - like a hockey puck!

dameofdilemma · 12/12/2018 10:20

We have both cafetiere and Aeropress and did a blindfold taste test - both tasted exactly the same.

LittleScottieDog · 12/12/2018 13:57

Love my Aeropress, it makes the best coffee, especially as we've got a milk frother too, so I end up with a nice frothy latte. We grind beans usually, but as I'm currently preggers and drinking decaf it's ground for the time being. It's so much easier to clean than my experience with cafetieres; coffee gets pushed into the food bin and the whole thing is rinced quickly under the tap.

And we call it a puck too!
