Off sick from work and feel so guilty

I had a miscarriage about 2 weeks ago and an erpc last Tuesday, I was meant to be back at work yesterday but I rang my gp and asked for another week. I feel so so rubbish about being off! I've only just started this job, and the miscarriage happened on my last day of 2 weeks annual leave it literally couldn't have happened at a worse time, I'll have been off work for a month by the time I get back. I feel awful about it.

However I slept for 18 hours last night so I clearly do need to be off but I do feel so guilty. Is it just me who feels like this when off? My boss told me to take as much time as I need because it takes it out of you and it doesn't count as Sickness

I don't think you should feel bad. You need time to recover both emotionally and physically Thanks

AlexaShutUp · 11/12/2018 20:12

Well, it does still "count" as sickness, I presume, but you can't be disciplined for it if it's pregnancy related.

Everyone reacts differently to miscarriage, and there is no right/wrong response. Personally, I felt better sticking to my normal routine, and I went back to work almost immediately. However, if you don't feel that you are well enough to go back to work and your doctor agrees, then you need more time off and there is absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.

You should not feel guilty at all. I hope you're okay.
Your boss sounds understanding at least and not a horrible boss who would be hounding you by phone or email

I ALWAYS feel guilty when I'm off sick. I think they do it on purpose so you go back quickly.
Please look after yourself right now. I had a MC a few years ago and went straight back to work and it was a huge mistake. It took me a really long time to come to terms with it. Just listen to yourself you'll know what you need. Be kind to yourself.

miggeldysthepres · 11/12/2018 20:15

I dont think it can be recorded as sickness actually. Wishing you all the best, id take as much time as you need, as you're dealing with both physical and emotional effects.

FluffyBunnyTails · 11/12/2018 20:33

Just take as much time as you need, going back too soon could mean you need to be off again. Unfortunate you haven't been there long but it's a job, your health and mental state is more important.
I had 3 weeks off work after mine and went back for the first 2 weeks on reduced hours.

Look after yourself and rest up x

I think I t's recorded as sickness (so you can get SSP or whatever) but can't be used against you, so omitted from calculations for your attendance for reviews, can't trigger disciplinary, etc.

I always feel terrible when I'm off sick - unless I'm actually contagious or immobile I feel like I'm not 'ill enough', even if I'm sleeping 18 hours a day or would be absolutely useless anyway I still get the guilt.

Frlrlrubert · 11/12/2018 20:49

And sorry for your loss OP Thanks

You should take as long as you need.

madmumofteens · 12/12/2018 07:05

So sorry for your loss OP rest up and give yourself time to grieve 💐 My understanding is if you are off sick then have Annual leave you have to get a note from the doctor to say you are fit to go on Annual leave. If you are on Annual leave and you have been ill especially if pregnancy related you just have to inform your employer get a sick note from your doctor and if it happens in the middle of you leave you will get leave back that's how it worked (ex government service). Take good care of yourself, your health is so much more important than a job!!

I'm so glad I'm off now, we had testing done for molar pregnancy and it's come back positive so I have to have another d&c today. Work are not happy I'm off but I really couldn't give a shit anymore
