My 2 year old son had a chest infection 29th of November, got given amoxicilli n for 5 days, he finished on the Tuesday after, had diarrhoea Wednesday and seemed a bit better and eating then. Thursday night he started to seem quiet and tired, woke up friday with no appetite at all, Friday night tried to eat but ended up throwing up a bit, he was still quiet on Saturday, by Sunday he wouldn't eat a thing and slept for most of the day, we went back to the doctors yesterday and was told he now had tonsillitis, on antibiotics again for 10 days, what I'm asking is what's normal? He's been sleeping nearly most of the day, not eating, he threw up again today after trying to eat a few sweets, he is still coughing. He won't eat ice lollies, yoghurts, jelly etc. I've tried so much. Is it normal to be so sleepy and vomit with tonsillitis?

My baby had tonsolitiea a few weeks ago (he is one) . He didnt want to eat at all just small sips of milk or water . Is normal not to eat as its painfull .i would say if he is lethargic and if you are worried then get him check out

He went to the doctors yesterday but when he's there he screams and kicks about, the doctor struggled to look down his throat, os if I took him again he wouldn't be able to examine him, might request a phone consultation in the morning. Did your baby vomit with it?

Yes he did vomit alot ! In the first two days all he did was sit on me and sleep on me to be honest . Antibiotics took about 3 days to "work"
Does he have fever ? I was giving him nurofen as well to help with pain and fever . Doctor said it was ok !
You have my sympathies its awful !
Mine also got over a chest infection this week !! They go around !

Tonsillitis is so much more than the sore throat that many people see it to be.

I have an older teen who was flat in bed for over a week with it

However if you are worried please see you GP

He vomited Friday night and today so far. He has literally slept all day today, I should have realised sooner but he's behind and doesn't talk yet, he didn't seem in pain as such just unwell so I thought a virus, I took him to the doctors when he started sleeping all day and not eating anything. I feel so guilt, he started anti biotics yesterday at 11.30 and is still no better at all. Thankyou for replying atleast I know vomiting and sleeping all day is normal. Sorry to hear about you lo having chest infection, hope he gets better soon

Is normal when they are poorly but if he is difficult to wake or lethargic yhen contact your gp kor 111 out of hours

LRTR · 11/12/2018 16:33

Thankyou for replying @italiancortado. He went to GP yesterday and screamed and kicked about until we left. Doctor could barely get a look at him. I was lucky enough to never get tonsillitis so didn't know what to expect. I guess I'll stop worrying so much if sleeping all day and vomiting is normal

It's worth ringing your GP and mentioning it. Once we had what we since refer to wistfully as "The Day of Sleep" just after DS started nursery - he'd had a cold and an eye infection earlier in the week, then on the Friday, he just slept all day, only waking for his bottles. We called the GP who said to bring him down just to make sure it wasn't sepsis or anything. It wasn't! He was just tired and feeling ill. But worth checking.

LRTR · 11/12/2018 16:40

@SleepySofa I will ring first thing in the morning. I did mention it yesterday but could barely ask him anything as my son was screaming and kicking about that bad, we literally had to get his prescription and go

I guess if he was kicking and screaming when they saw him, they wouldn't be worried about him being lethargic!

LRTR · 11/12/2018 16:47

@SleepySofa that's true, I didn't think of that. I will ring in the morning

He is also still coughing quite a lot

It usually takes 36-48 hours for antibiotics to really work when I have a chest infection, so hopefully he'll be feeling better tomorrow.

LRTR · 11/12/2018 16:58

@SleepySofa Fingers crossed. All I want to do is help him but nothing I do is helping😔
