Which wool for a chunky knit scarf?

My lovely DM made a big chunky knit loop scarf for me a few years ago. I wear it quite a lot in winter and would love another one in a different colour. I'm sure my DM would be more than happy to knit another one but if I ask, she'll insist on buying the wool as well and I'd feel like a massive CF.

Can anyone help me with what type of wool I'd need to buy? I've attached a pic of the scarf with a penny in it for scale. Any idea roughly what yarn weight / needle size was used here?
I've seen some wool in a lovely colour combination but the description says it's ideal for felting. Would that still be suitable for a scarf or would the whole thing basically turn into a solid felt blanket when washed?

Many thanks in advance!

I would take the scarf to your wool shop. The staff should be able to guide you ( and sell you the wool!) Happy knitting

That looks like about 2.5st/penny, which is about 12.5st/4" so a thick chunky. These are chunky yarns and these are super chunky. If you like the idea of super chunky Drops Andes is very warm and soft enough for me to wear round my neck.

The ballband will tell you roughly what size needles to use.

Your felting yarn won't felt unless is gets wet and agitated, so as long as you wash it gently, by hand, in cool water and lay it flat to dry it'll be OK.
