How to deal with DN 13?

Posting here for traffic - long standing poster under a namechange....

DNephew (13, Year 9) has been struggling recently - dsis is a LP after an acrimonious divorce and he's recently decided he doesn't want to see his father. He really doesn't like school, which has been unsupportive of him and is due to change to a new school next academic year.

He's been hanging round with some fairly horrible types and has now come home obviously having smoked weed. When dsis tried to talk to him about it he's gone out again and is now not answering his phone.

Sis is understandably at the end of her tether with the situation and although she's talked a lot to him about getting support through GP/School/Counselor he's refusing all help.

Anybody have any experience of what to do in this situation? I think the drug use and the being out of the house at all hours, although obviously linked, are separate issues. She can't physically make him stay in. He's clearly unhappy but if he won't engage then what can we do?

Any input very much appreciated. He's a good kid and can be absolutely lovely but DSis just doesn't know where to go from here.

Tbh, in every situation that I've known things have had to get worse and its been on the involvement of the Police etc that theres been a change in attitude.

Is there anything positive happening?

Does your Sis manage to have normal conversations were the focus isn't on what's going wrong?

He's involved with criminal behaviour, another option is to get really tough and speak to the Police. She can stop him from going out, he's thirteen. I mean legally she can.

Or it's a case to see if a new school can be a new start.
