Alexa and Sonos - help am clueless!

I really am hopeless with tech stuff. Can anyone please explain in simple terms the difference between Alexa/Amazon dot and Sonos?

I read lots of articles online which has confused me even more. I thought Sonos was just a speaker/music streaming device but apparently it does voice commands too?

Thanks for any help - brain is frazzled!

Sonos are expensive fancy wireless speakers. Recently they've added Alexa software to them too, in the latest versions this year.

The Amazon Dot is the tiniest cheapest Alexa device, it does nothing else but Alexa and has a tiny speaker that's not very good.

Essentially the latest Sonos speakers with Alexa are just the old Sonos with a Dot embedded in them.

Thanks - that's really helpful!

As a warning...

If you buy the sonos one it will only work as surround sound with another sonos one. The same goes with the Play:1.

I have a combination of sonos players and echo dots. I use the echo dots to control the sonos sometimes as my sonos players are old and don't have the built in voice control.
