Resigning from job

I work in a small company and approx 4 people in the main office area where I'm based. The job is very low paid and I've found something that will suit me better. I needed to tell my manager today I would be leaving so I can start my new job in time ( working my month's notice period). I'm off sick today and not in again until later in the week. Would it be unreasonable to send an email later today explaining along with written confirmation? For some reason I'm getting into a state about telling them, especially as they may struggle to find someone else. Should I wait and tell them personally later in the week or get the ball rolling and send email today?

I'd email today.

Phone and speak to your boss. Then send the email to confirm.

sorry, yes, I'd phone first and then email.

If you need to give one months notice; I think you'd owe them a day if you call tomorrow.
