Just saw on the news that the European Court of Jystice gas ruked we don't need permission from the other EU members to withdraw from Brexit.

Good, I hope we can get a proper vote on the deal now.

The thing is this though. We had a vote vote which returned a result to leave. What's the point in democracy when decisions can be over turned.

Coggle · 10/12/2018 10:17

The whole point of democracy is that, over time and as circumstances change, you are able to change your mind.
We now know for sure that Brexit would be a disaster for the UK. This is our chance to avoid that disaster.

What's the point of having general elections every few years then?

Satsumaeater · 10/12/2018 10:18

I should say I don't want another referendum - I want our politicians to get us out of the mess they've got us into.

gonzo77 · 10/12/2018 10:20

Brexit will not be a disaster for the UK (I appreciate we all hold different opinions). We voted to leave. We expect to leave.

scaryteacher · 10/12/2018 10:21

Some of us haven't changed our minds though Coggle

This ruling also pisses off the EU as then any member state can invoke and revoke Article 50 for extra concessions, and if one Article can be unilaterally revoked, then surely, that must apply to all of them. The ECJ have opened Pandora's box here.

Coggle · 10/12/2018 10:27

Maybe Parliament should actually do their job and do what's best for the huge majority, not just a few rich people who don't give a toss about the country as a whole.

Coggle · 10/12/2018 10:29

The ECJ will change its rules. The UK needs to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

eurochick · 10/12/2018 10:32

The ECJ can't just"change its rules". But yes, it has given the government an out and they should take it.

Frosty66611 · 10/12/2018 10:35

I agree with you OP. I hope it doesn’t end up happening

StealthPolarBear · 10/12/2018 10:35

We need to take advantage of this

frompampastobroadway · 10/12/2018 10:38

God I wish we could revoke A50, this is going to be a long week...

Childrenofthesun · 10/12/2018 10:40

It at least gives us an out if we get to March and the government has still failed to get any deal through Parliament. No deal will no longer be the only option - I think the Grieve amendment had already reduced the likelihood of No deal anyway as despite their general uselessness over the last two years, most MPs have finally woken up to the fact that if there was a chaotic exit, the public would never forgive them when they actually see the consequences.

RedBlu · 10/12/2018 10:42

I think if they do do a second referendum, the people who voted to leave will still vote leave and more will vote leave purely because they are angry that the first vote was ignored. We voted, leave won - it's not the best of three.

If it was the other way around, would the people who voted to remain be happy if the people voted to leave pushed for a second vote because they didn't get the outcome they wanted, probably not.

If a second vote does happen, I think there will be rioting

Cherries101 · 10/12/2018 10:47

We need a second referendum with the ACTUAL Brexit deal on the table. That’s the only fair way to do this

Coggle · 10/12/2018 10:48

If we get a no deal or hard Brexit the majority of leavers will quickly learn that they were conned. Nothing is more likely to lead to riots than serious food shortages and the collapse of free healthcare.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 10/12/2018 10:49

Some of us haven't changed our minds though Coggle

If people haven't changed their mind they are free to vote as they did before. If Leave is truly 'the will of the people' then it'll just win again and we'll crack on with it.

Or maybe the result will reflect that a lot of people voted without considering what the end result of a Leave vote would look like and Remain will suddenly be 'the will of the people'.

The landscape today isn't the same as it was a couple of years ago and without another referendum we actually have no idea what the appetite is for Brexit now.

If it was the other way around, would the people who voted to remain be happy if the people voted to leave pushed for a second vote because they didn't get the outcome they wanted, probably not.

If Remain had been sold based on lies, dubious funding and backing and all of that had been made abundantly clear, repeatedly, then yes I'd suck it up and realise that another vote would be the right thing to do even if it risked a leave result.

Coggle · 10/12/2018 10:50

And I don't think most leavers will be thrilled by the replacement of Eastern European workers with Asians and Africans.

bellinisurge · 10/12/2018 10:54

As long as we avoid No Deal, I can tolerate TM Deal.
I voted Remain. I'm not lobbying for another referendum because of the likelihood of
a) No Deal being on it; and
b) enough people being stupid enough to vote No Deal.

Childrenofthesun · 10/12/2018 10:54

^^Yes. There is a part of me that thinks the only way to get through the ignorance and denial is to actually go ahead with the lunacy of no deal Brexit so people can actually see the consequences. But I have kids who need a future and family who rely on imported medication so I don't actually want to see it happen.

Suzeyshoes · 10/12/2018 10:55

I want our politicians to get us out of the mess they've got us into.

They can't. This was always going to be an absolute disaster. You can't untwine 40 years of shared law with a click of your fingers. Anyone who believes this can happen without a total shit storm is deluded.

Childrenofthesun · 10/12/2018 10:55

And I used the word actually far too many times there!

groundcontroltomontydon · 10/12/2018 11:02

Brexit will not be a disaster for the UK
The words of someone who hasn't listened to a single parliamentary select cmte question a single govt dept witness on Brexit preparedness

Totally agree, Childrenofthesun. Let those who made this happen reap the consequences. Problem is it will hit the weakest and most clueless the hardest. Boris and his chums should be criminally prosecuted for the monster they created. And all those who happily sit in their four bedroom houses saying 'It will be fine!' whilst others go to food banks and can't get life saving medicines for their children.
