I've just tried the mumsnet haircut!

I've been toying with the idea for years and finally, desperation has forced me to ignore the stories of bad mullets and other home hair cut disasters and try it (in my last couple of weeks of maternity leave so fairly skint and in need of a back-to-work trim).

It actually works!! Looks a normal shape at the back, has a few layers and feels like I've had a proper hair cut when I run my fingers through it Smile.

Hopefully this means I can cut the costly salon trips down a bit this year not that I ever went more than 2-3 times a year anyway Grin

What's a mumsnet haircut?

ShowOfHands · 08/12/2018 20:27

Aherm.

You know the rules...

1MillionSelfiesTakenByMyKids · 08/12/2018 20:27

Turn head upside down. Make ponytail on forehead. Take sharp scissors and chop across the end.
I've done it. It looked ok, but the layers were a bit short on top for me to do it again

What's a mumsnet hair cut.Xmas Confused

Skatersbeskating · 08/12/2018 20:34

I did it a few weeks ago. I lifted it waaaay too high & ended up with a mullet Hmm

Its passable though just

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 08/12/2018 20:34

I watched this video (about a million times!) - the way she angles the cut at the end has made the layers quite subtle.

Picture plllleaaaaseeeee!
I am considering it too.

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 08/12/2018 20:35

Bear with me - not very tech savvy and on my phone but I'll try to do a picture now.

I think it must depend on the shape of your head and the thickness of your hair as to whether it goes mullety?

I did it once years ago, it looked quite good to be fair.

Stormwhale · 08/12/2018 20:38

I contemplated this a couple of weeks ago. Thank goodness I saw a post from a salon on fb needing hair models. Got a free haircut!

Skatersbeskating · 08/12/2018 20:40

Ahhh, I ahem, didnt watch the video.

I chopped it off at sort of eye level. Thats why I look like a twat then Xmas Confused

Paozolo · 08/12/2018 20:42

Ive been doing that cut for a couple of years now! It works most of thr time but I find it's better to not have the hair pulled so far forward, but I have very curly hair so it hides some of the disasters of uneven cuts that sometimes happens Grin

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 08/12/2018 20:44

From the back. I only took about 1.5 inches off - too scared to do more on a first attempt! Grin

I've just tried the mumsnet haircut!

Doh, first pic didn't post!

It's not straightened so not sure how clear the layers are.

Skaters that was my fear!! I hope your hair recovers soon!

There are other videos but this one talks about where to have each section of your hair in the ponytail. If I hadn't watched it I think my Op would have been very be different Confused

Just don't take too much off avoids any disasters

thugmansion · 08/12/2018 21:06

My work colleague does this but instead of the pony tail makes two high bunches and cuts. Looks very professional

BumbleBeee69 · 08/12/2018 21:08

you have great hair OP Flowers

missmouse101 · 08/12/2018 21:09

I used to do this and it was really good!

Onatreebyariver · 08/12/2018 21:31

Yep I do this. Make sure you make the ponytail RIGHT at the front of your forehead like a unicorn horn. NOT on the top of your head. On the front.

Looks great and saves a fortune.

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 08/12/2018 21:51

Thanks BumbleBeee Smile

spugzbunny · 08/12/2018 21:56

It looks great on you! I'm not sure it looks good on the Gil in the video though!

Someone once told me to do the same but right on the top like a pineapple! The cut straight across. It layers all around.

I used to just get wined up and go at mine with scissors when I was younger. How I miss those days!
