What can you remember that makes you seem ancient?

I remember us getting our very first colour TV.

I can remember a rag and bone man coming up my granny’s street - can’t remember if it was a horse drawn trailer or not.

Granny had an Anderson shelter.

I remember not having to wear seatbelts.

When everyone used to smoke at work and in pubs.

The bin men coming into the back garden to collect the bin for emptying and then carrying it back to where they’d had it from.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/12/2018 21:00

My mum had block mascara!

So did mine, she also had a set of Mary Quant pencils I drooled over shamelessly.

the Beatles splitting up
the first moon landing
all bottles were glass and came either with a tin foil head (milk) or with a "redoable flip open lid" (they are now having a come back)
bedrooms with no heating
potato, coal and rag and bone men with horse drawn carts
the wedding of Beatrix and Claus watchend on a gigantic black and white TV set with a tiny screen in one of those TV-radio furniture things and you either had voice/no picture or picture/no voice or some voice/lower half of the picture on top

When TV was like a moving seaside postcard; Man About The House for the dolly birds, and Jim Davidson being hilarious as Chalky. watching the Black and White Minstrels and Legs and Co.

When I got a job in Safeway we had to learn the names of all the Produce so we could accurately look it up and ring it manually into the till.

Having a messenger at my first job in a bank called Bert that brought a tea trolley round twice a day.

When anything the audience wore on a Thursday on TOTP was a total sell-out by Saturday.

Watching the first episode of Fame and by Saturday wearing leg warmers.

When you camped and couldn't go anywhere near the tent walls.

Buying hair mousse so your extreme wedge would hold.

Taking in your Pepe non Lycra jeans on your Nana's sewing machine to the extent your legs itched and went blue.

Going on holiday and coming home with all manner of glass tubes filled with lines of coloured sand; pencils, vases, shoes

Athena posters

Driving through the Brixton riots just after we got married. No M25 back then.

Flatley's - anyone else remember those?

being burnt by cigarettes by ladies holding them with a straight arm, slightly turned out - was a very fashionable pose at the time

free rosehip syrup for kids - I think for vitamin c but oh all that sugar...

rotary phones - loved ours - 2 tone green was our 1st one

Shared landline phones as there weren't enough lines for each house to have their own

green and pink shield stamps - rewarding customer loyalty is not new.......

Bejazzled · 09/12/2018 21:49

most of all of the above 😮

missmouse101 · 09/12/2018 21:52

Tales of the Unexpected. The first ever episode of EastEnders. Rentaghost.

"When I got a job in Safeway we had to learn the names of all the Produce so we could accurately look it up and ring it manually into the till"

That reminds me - actual physical price labels on all supermarket goods.

As a checkout girl we had to know the prices in case the labels fell off or customers switched them.

We also had to know which products came under which dept as we had to key in price then dept, presumably so each dept could track profit/sales. If we hit the wrong dept by accident we were supposed to get it voided by a supervisor but of course they got pissed off if you did that a lot. So we learned to be VERY quick at arithmetic and put an item from the dept we'd mistakenly attributed the sale to through on the dept the first item should have been but if it was a different price you had to balance it? If that makes sense?

I was crap at maths at school that job made my arithmetic improve 100 fold!

Cash point machines that had a clear plastic shield that slid up when you put your card in!

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/12/2018 22:04

My first bike, a Gresham Flyer. You could keep all your treasures in the boot. Sadly it also had a retractable pole at the rear for your spoilsport parent to hang on to and limit your speed. 😄

Oh, seeing the comment about the first moon landing made me think about when I watched the space shuttle blow up live on tv. Sad

Akire · 09/12/2018 22:11

In top primary our teacher was also a part time justice Of the peace. So a couple of times a year he would go off to court. He used to leave us work on the board. 9-945 Maths p10-15
945-1030 English do X. Occasional another teacher would put their head around the door but we were just left to get on with it.

National anthem playing to end night TV

Old train carriages with compartments and doors straight out onto platform.

In my early 40s!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 09/12/2018 22:18

Price stickers on items in supermarkets.

Shit what happened to them???

Actually they still use them in Trago Mills.

missmouse101 · 09/12/2018 22:22

Those pale blue 3 wheeled cars for people with disabilities in the 70s.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 09/12/2018 22:23

I miss blockbuster. I know it's cheaper and easier now we have Netflix and so on but it was the treat. My dad used to walk us up to Penzance Video library on Saturdays and let us have a proper film and a Simpson's video. Such good times!

Dd1 and I used to go to blockbuster on mutley plain and she could have a barbie dvd for 50p or something. Dd2 never got to do it she wasn't born!

I think now everything is so accessible my kids don't treasure it in the same way.
