What can you remember that makes you seem ancient?

I remember us getting our very first colour TV.

I can remember a rag and bone man coming up my granny’s street - can’t remember if it was a horse drawn trailer or not.

Granny had an Anderson shelter.

I remember not having to wear seatbelts.

When everyone used to smoke at work and in pubs.

Tin bath on a nail by the back door
Sharing an outside loo with 4 other families
The rag and bone man with his horse exchanging old clothes for donkey stones or balloons
hula hoops the first time round
walking everywhere
getting our first telly. the cabinet was massive and the telly was 12"
we had to crowd round and squint to see it but we thought it was great
getting proper bus tickets from a machine that went 'kerching' I always wanted to be a bus conductress
that's enough for now!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 09/12/2018 16:07

staying up really late to record (onto a cassette tape) computer games off the radio for the ZX81/Spectrum. We actually had a ZX80 as well as my DF was In Charge of computers at school and "acquired" it. No idea what happened to it, but I imagine it would be quite valuable now.

Carbon paper

Graphista · 09/12/2018 16:58

I had a zx81 I think we'll a 1/3 share in one (with siblings) given my dd gets impatient if a web page takes more than 10 secs to load NO WAY could she have coped with 90 MINS to download a game (and even then it didn't always work and you had to start all over again!)

Ice on the inside of the windows in Winter.

Hiding with my Mom from the gypsies when they knocked on the door.

Being sent to the shop to buy my Dad’s cigarettes when I was in junior school, I remember my teacher sent me to buy him some midway through a lesson once too.

Power cuts in the early 1970s

It being the norm to come home from school for lunch, and just walking with friends from infant school while our Moms were home waiting for us.

Clawdy · 09/12/2018 17:38

The week of the Queen's coronation, we were all given a commemorative mug at school.Mum told me to ask my teacher for one for my little sister. I didn't dare ask my teacher, so I went home, pretended I'd asked, and said "Mrs. Green said no, but she can have one next time."

Mum muttered "Well, she'll be waiting a bloody long time!" Very true, as it happens!

ProfessionallyUnoffended · 09/12/2018 17:51

Milk being delivered by horse and cart and my mum taking me out to give it a carrot. This was very early eighties in a normal surburban area so it must have been one of the last working milk cart horses i would imagine.

Elastic sanitary belts with hooks front and back where you hooked on the sanitary towels. Grim.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/12/2018 20:07

Ohhh God - I remember those too, @doeswhatitsaysonthetin - you are right - utterly grim. And my mum didn’t want them going in the bin, so I had to put them, wrapped in newspaper, in a bag in a cupboard, and she’s burn them in the coke fired central heating boiler - I was old enough to have periods, but not old enough to be trusted with Fire!

Bergerac. I was totally shocked and def thought ‘well, guess that’s it then. Today I have officially become ‘old’ ‘ when I mentioned Bergerac at work and they hadn’t a clue what I was talking about. I count Bergerac as being practically yesterday. How do my colleagues not know about it?! Did they watch Midsomer Murders for all those years, completely unaware of how tight that Nettles’ trousers used to be, and how he was practically a pin-up?

We have a one £1 note on the kitchen table. No idea where it appeared from.

happyclutterchucker · 09/12/2018 20:53

Holding up Quality Street wrappers in front of your eyes while watching tv to pretend you had a colour set.
