Apologies if there’s another thread. I looked but couldn’t find one.

I’ve been following this week and devastated to hear that it’s now a murder enquiry.

Apparently there’s someone in custody?

Yes I have been following this. Absolutely devastating for the family.
Have just seen someone has been charged with murder.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 08/12/2018 11:12

So so sad.

ThomasRichard · 08/12/2018 11:13

Some of the comments underneath the BBC News stories on Facebook are disgusting. Victim-blaming at its worst. Poor woman. Her family’s devastation doesn’t bear thinking about.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 08/12/2018 11:23

I really hope not. We will have moved to new lows when women are blamed for being murdered

Hushnownobodycares · 08/12/2018 11:38

I've been following and hoping. Gutted to hear someone's in custody.

MadMum101 · 08/12/2018 12:02

Horrifying. DD is exactly the same age and spent time abroad earlier this year. The relief that she got back OK, albeit with Hepatitis, was indescribable.

Auckland would never have struck me as a place to worry about and she was there for such a short time!

Poor girl. Can't imagine how her family feel now their worst fears are confirmed.

Birdsgottafly · 08/12/2018 12:08

"Auckland would never have struck me as a place to worry about and she was there for such a short time!"

Anywhere were Men are, Women, but young Women in particular, aren't safe.

When there was a thread about if it's wrong to worry more about our Daughters rather than Sons, I made the point that young Women are preyed upon.

WaitrosePigeon · 08/12/2018 12:35

I’ve not dared look at comments. I am assuming they are full of victim blaming.

I’m still hoping she’s found alive and ok.

So so sad. My heart goes out to her family. Those of us who’ve had sons and daughters that have gone off travelling - there but for the grace of God ..... I know it can happen anywhere but as you wave them off on their adventures you try to keep that nightmare out of your mind. That poor girl and her devastated family.

Thesearmsofmine · 08/12/2018 12:41

I am following, so very sad.

I saw people on twitter saying she shouldn’t be travelling alone which made me angry, why shouldn’t women be able to travel on their own. The blame is on the man who did this not her.

ManicUnicorn · 08/12/2018 12:41

'Men are scared that women will laugh at them, women are scared that men will kill them'.

Never underestimate just how much some men hate women.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 08/12/2018 12:46

So sad.

Must be utterly utterly heartbreaking for the rest of her family being on the other side of the world while life unfolds.

Poor girl and her family.

gingerandsmall · 08/12/2018 12:52

I went to uni with her and she lived with one of my friends. The comment sections of news articles are vile and to be avoided like the plague. They're full of 'she shouldn't have been travelling alone' and such like. It's a really sad set of circumstances

Clawdy · 08/12/2018 12:54

I would have been worried if any of my sons had travelled alone too. But so many young people are independent and strong, and should be able to do as they wish without being criticised. What a dreadful Christmas for that lovely girl's family.

Sorry phrased very badly - definitely not victim blaming, but having travelled a lot solo as a young woman, I know how what seems like a perfectly ok idea can turn bad very quickly!

coolwalking · 08/12/2018 19:05

Central Auckland is not a nice place during day let alone at night.

It's so sad and NZ will have the worlds eyes on it. Everyone will see our pathetic justice system.

KatherinaMinola · 08/12/2018 19:09

I can't imagine that the police would have announced a murder inquiry if there was any shred of doubt, Waitrose, though I did wonder what evidence they found that led them to that conclusion.

LelouchViBritanniaCommandsYou · 09/12/2018 07:15

The police have found a body now, not officially identified yet but thought to be Grace's. So heartbreaking for her family, I cried seeing her dad speaking.

It's absolutely awful, though sadly not surprising, that there have been comments blaming Grace for travelling alone etc. I live in New Zealand and the only comments I've seen have been full of sadness for Grace and her family, and anger at the man who did this. I think it's hit the country quite hard, we were so hoping for a different outcome.

HarrySnotter · 09/12/2018 07:35

I read this morning that the police believe the body they have found to be poor Grace's. Devastating.

A man has been arrested.

tinstar · 09/12/2018 12:23

This is so heartbreaking. My dcs are all early 20s and so many of their friends have been - or are - travelling. Some in groups, some alone. Grace's graduation photo is particularly heartbreaking - she looks so happy and has so much to look forward to. Her poor poor family. The policeman leading the investigation looks like he's only just holding it together when he gives interviews. I can't imagine the devastation her family must be feeling.

WaitrosePigeon · 09/12/2018 17:17

Horrible outcome.

Upper Queen Street in Auckland was quite dodgy. (Aucklander now living in England). But it’s a lot safer than many cities. And she just arrived in NZ from South America. It also makes me angry it’s again women not safe on the streets.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 09/12/2018 17:32

Her family live ot far from me and I am devastated for them. So many young people backpack around the world and this poor girl met the wrong person. Just devastating,

lostinjapan · 09/12/2018 17:34

It’s good news really that they’ve found her body (knowing as we did that this was a murder investigation).
