Tenant reference from council

Hi
Just been offered a housing Association flat but they are required to check a tenants reference with my current council - anyone know what’s involved

Usually things like; Are there rent arrears? Was there any bad behaviour? as well as rent and tenancy details. Nothing to in depth, unless you have left a trail of destruction behind you.

No I’m all up to date just had a bit of a slip with council tax :(
Been waiting two weeks to get a response from council, just a bit worried the c tax will ruin it for me

I'd be surprised if they included council tax in the reference (they can take a while) however the HA may do some kind of financial assessment.

They did all that and that came back fine just waiting on the council someone said they can take forever to come back so guess I just play the waiting game. Thanks for the quick response.

Do you have a CCJ in relation to the council tax? In which case it could have been added on to any outstanding arrears on your tenancy rent records. If not then I wouldn't worry. If yes but paid off, or repayment agreement already in place then it's fine.

They take it off my wage and I disclosed it when they did the financial check.

In our reference we ask if you’ve caused any anti social behaviour, damaged the property, have any rent arrears etc. We only need to know about housing related debt which we don’t class council tax as.

If it's already set up as a DD from your wage then I'd say it'll be okay as you're bringing down the amount regardless of it shows up. So long as people demonstrate willing to rectify the outstanding arrears then that's usually what's being looked for. If it went as far as a CCJ then my council do show that on records vs just rent payments as it's a court set default of inclusive housing costs payment. But you haven't ignored the debt and the amount is coming down.
