Just been very rude to some men on the train and now I’m both embarrassed and slightly scared

In fairness, they were rude first. But I am possibly the least confrontational person in the world (with strangers, at least) and I’m not sure what came over me. Bunch of laddy blokes, early 20s and clearly fairly well-oiled, being generally loud and obnoxious. Leering and commenting at some teenage girls who initially tried to ignore them then sensibly moved carriages. Everyone else ignoring them. I eventually got sick of it and went to move carriages as well but that involved walking past them. As I did so one of them said something along the lines of he’d happily fuck me even though I’m fat Hmm and others all laughed. Normally I’d just ignore but for some reason I turned round, intending to channel Mumsnet with ‘did you mean to be so rude?’ But what actually came out was ‘is there any particular reason why you’re being so rude today or are you always just a bunch of total cunts?’ Blush

Audible gasp from someone else in carriage, followed by rather ominous silence so I scurried off. Now sitting at the other end of the train shaking, mortified and hoping they don’t come to find me Confused.

You did good OP!

I was in the First Class carriage recently, on a Cross Country Trains service, and it was taken over by drunk, loud and obnoxious football supporters. I'd specifically booked First Class because I knew that there was a match and supporters would be travelling on that route and I'd wanted to avoid that situation in Standard. They were basically left to get on with it and when I got off I actually found the train manager and with him were two BTP officers, they were all standing in the compartment next to the carriage so could see what was happening. I asked why they hadn't intervened and they said that there was nothing that they could do which was quite baffling. The manager confirmed that First Class hadn't been declassified but he said that he couldn't get through the carriage to move them as the aisle was packed full.

High five to you, AveAtqueVale!

CaliHummers · 07/12/2018 15:42

Well done OP.

I really don't understand behaviour like that. Just about all of those men would have had wives, girlfriends, sisters etc and not one would have wanted them treated like this, so why they do it to other women?

I think it's to do with the way they don't fully view women as people but as a form of property or extension of themselves. So they don't want someone doing this to "their" womenfolk but, not truly seeing women as individuals, don't give a shit about doing it to women they don't know. You can bet if a boyfriend of you or the teenagers had turned up, they would have apologised to him, but not to the women concerned. They would also expect to be present with "their" women and not have it happen but think unaccompanied women are fair game, because they are out in public without a man.

Robot Hugs explains it well.

Kintan · 07/12/2018 15:42

Amazing! I hope you are now feeling proud and not embarrassed or scared!

Heuschrecke · 07/12/2018 15:44

Oh. And don't be scared. They're not going to follow you down the train or do anything to you. Really, they aren't.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 07/12/2018 15:52

They do it because they’re in a group and hat gives them the cofidence to behave like morons. Kids in the playground.

Good for you for standing up to them. No one should have to put up with that.

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 07/12/2018 15:52
