Freezer broke... just want to rant

Everything has defrosted. Have no idea when it stopped working. Did a big shop on Tuesday and filled it. It’s all gone. Two black bags of food had to be dumped this morning. I had most of the Christmas food in there. Had a meal plan for the month as we are broke this month, like everyone else, so made a meal plan last month and have being buying extra stuff in with the week shopping for about 6 weeks to make life a bit easier and the shopping bill a bit smaller for the big shop on Christmas week. What we buy then has to last approximately 2 weeks so I always stock up for weeks in advance.
And it’s all gone. I want to cry.
I have to try and get the freezer fixed or just do without one but cannot see how anyone can do without a freezer for Christmas. Our fridge is separate with no freezer.
I just need a wee rant and don’t want to rant in front of the dc. Feeling very sorry for myself right now. I know it’s not a major problem but it’s so horrible that everytime we take one step forward we seem to take two back.

Can you claim on your insurance?

sackrifice · 07/12/2018 12:16

Are you sure it doesn't just need defrosting? Ours went but after we had a new one delivered, turns out it just needed some ice removing from a sensor.

mawi · 07/12/2018 12:18

I don’t know. I have being that upset this morning I haven’t thought clearly at all. Will look into it.
Thank you

I have no idea actually. Will look at sensors. Thanks for that.

Check FB groups for second-hand ones, often people just want to get rid of them v cheaply.

mawi · 07/12/2018 12:19

So glad I posted now. Have not being thinking clearly at all this morning and you are making my brain work. Thank you

I feel your pain op.

If you have home insurance it should cover the cost of replacing the contents- hopefully. Minus any excess.

HebeMumsnet · 07/12/2018 12:25

Oh OP. I feel your pain. If it helps, exactly the same thing happened to me this week only it was all my fault. I had accidentally switched it off at the wall when I was trying to turn off another switch. So cross with myself.

If it's broken though your insurance company may well pay out for the cost of the food at least. Definitely worth a go. (Mine won't pay out I think because I am a Freezertwat and did all this myself!)

And yes, good suggestions above for Freecycle, FB groups etc. Lots of people upgrade their freezers at this time of year so you might well pick up a second hand one for free.

Have got it humming again people.
I just panicked.
The food is gone but the freezer is making the humming noise so fingers crossed it is only the food that is gone.
Will change meal plan, we are eating loads of pasta bake this week now 😂 but no one will starve and just be a bit more frugal and it will be all good.
Thank you for calming me down because my brain just could not comprehend what to do.
And sorry Hebe that you had the same panic this week.

Oh hooray! That's one thing at least then. Hope you don't live anywhere near me. There will be some well fed foxes sniffing around the bins this week. But on the plus side, at least it's saved you the trouble of defrosting it and lots of space for Christmas leftovers.

Hope the pasta bakes don't get too tedious!

mawi · 07/12/2018 13:45

Pre Christmas defrost is a good way to look at it Hebe.
I took the food straight to the pay what it weighs dump place (I can’t remember the correct name for it) because this week is the recycling bin so it would have to sit for a whole week in the bin because today is bin day.
Have just checked again and it’s still humming so hopefully tomorrow I can start using it again.
I have sausages and rashers in the fridge so today I think I will use the sausages with mash and beans because all my veg was frozen and start on pasta tomorrow with some rasher through it.
Any cheap recipes for pasta sauces would be good right about now.

Happened to meet last month. Fridge freezer just packed up. Didn't realise for 24 hours as I was at work but thought the Fridge wasn't very cold. Had to chuck loads of stuff out. I was so pissed off. Managed to get a cheap new one on a club book so can take 6 months to pay for it.

There's an issue with the freezer on my fridge freezer. The bottom tends to ice up and if I don't defrost it regularly enough the whole thing stops working. But once it's defrosted it works again. I think this can be a common problem. It's happened to me about 3 times. A good tip is to have a couple of those insulated bags and then, if you notice in time, you can fill them with the freezer food and it stays frozen for hours. Then refill it once you've defrosted it. I do notice in my own life that if a big appliance is going to break it always seems to be just before Christmas! My dishwasher is currently playing up. It's bloody annoying.

StandardPoodle · 07/12/2018 16:18

Rather than throw away everything which has defrosted and you can't eat in time, is there anything you could cook and then freeze cooked if you freezer is now ok?
So sorry this has happened to you.

Fluffyears · 07/12/2018 16:41

I have a good pasta sauce using bacon, chop a red onion and crush some garlic and dry in some olive oil, oncenonion has softened add a win of chopped tomatoes, chopped cooked bacon (smoked is best),add in tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and season to taste x
