How do you feel about fruitcake/Christmas pudding?

I bloody loathe the stuff. I hate dried fruit anyway but the combination of dried fruit and alcohol and sometimes marzipan is just one horror after another for me. I don't like mince pies either. I've tried Christmas pudding once, never again, it was one of the worst things I've ever eaten.

I can't be alone in my loathing surely?

You are not alone. Dried fruit actually makes me retch. I also hate meat so Christmas food is mostly grim for me. I have my own version of Christmas dinner instead.

Snowwontbelong · 06/12/2018 11:20

Dr maybe you could do an alternative Christmas food thread?

SymphonyofShadows · 06/12/2018 11:20

No one in our house likes dried fruit and Christmas pud is like heartburn on a plate for me. We have a baked lemon cheesecake instead, with a ginger nut base.

Love christmas cake with a slice of cheese.

SnuggyBuggy · 06/12/2018 11:23

I get a small one as there are only a small number who eat it and then only a small piece. I like a bit but it's obviously not everyone's cup of tea. I usually do some sort of sponge cake as an alternative.

DeadCertain · 06/12/2018 11:26

Dried fruit + alcohol + marzipan = heaven for me!!!

Ratonastick · 06/12/2018 11:37

Bloody love it! But I am, tragically, the only member of the clan that does. Now, you would think that means all the more for me, but no it means none for me as there is “no point in buying it so we’ll have chocolate log instead”.

AND i’m the only sprout eater too and get the same response. I sometime feel a little peeved!

SnuggyBuggy · 06/12/2018 11:38

Ratonastick, get yourself some Christmas cake bites

Grinchly · 06/12/2018 11:54

Fruitcake is lovely.
Christmas pudding and mince pies vomitous.

Avegemitesandwich · 06/12/2018 11:55

I only make an Xmas cake these days so that I can eat it with cheese!

driggle · 06/12/2018 11:58

I hate mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake. I like dried fruit actually but I hate alcohol in things. Give me a yule log and those Mr Kipling Frosty Fancies. I'll demolish those with a cuppa in minutes.

HappyGoLuckyGo · 06/12/2018 11:59

What’s all this about Christmas cake with cheese?!

Annasgirl · 06/12/2018 12:06

Love Love Love the cake but I make my own (only started when darling DM passed away 3 years ago, using her revered recipe). I hate the shop bought stuff - I make my own marzipan which I can tell you tastes nothing like the paste you get on shop bought cakes. Although I will eat some shop bought cakes in December while I wait for mine to mature - just don't eat the icing.

I'm ambivalent about pudding but usually have some out of a sense of tradition - prefer chocolate tart though, which I always buy or make for the rest of the family who hate pudding, yes, I heat a pudding and eat it alone for the sake of tradition!!!!!!

DappledThings · 06/12/2018 12:17

Love all of them. For our wedding cake we were originally going to have just the bottom tier traditional fruit then two others as apparently loads of people don't like it now. After a little deliberation we decided that as we bloody love it we'd have all 3 tiers fruitcake. It all got scoffed down.

RedPandaMama · 06/12/2018 12:18

Don't like christmas pud but marzipan and icing makes fruit cake delish.

RedPandaMama · 06/12/2018 12:19

@DappledThings wow! My mum is a professional cake maker and she's only ever done one all fruit as they're SO heavy people can't lift them! Hope you enjoyed your wedding cake.

Rockbird · 06/12/2018 12:22

I've haven't eaten either for years but someone gave me a sliver of Christmas cake last week and I felt a renewed fondness for it. Can't stand icing, marzipan, nuts, those rotten cherries, or peel though.

mum11970 · 06/12/2018 12:23

Mince pies are lovely. Fruitcake without alcohol and marzipan is nice. Christmas pudding is vile.

purplecorkheart · 06/12/2018 12:25

I like them in very small quanities.

DappledThings · 06/12/2018 12:55

RedPandaMama Loved it. You know traditionally you're meant to save the top tier for your firstborn's christening? We ate that whole tier over our week's honeymoon. Sorrynotsorry.

halfwitpicker · 06/12/2018 12:56

Love it. Fucking sugary high carb alcoholic gloriousness.

TheDogsMother · 06/12/2018 12:59

Absolutely love them. If there are any Christmas puds and cakes going spare send them my way Grin

toastfiend · 06/12/2018 14:40

Love, love, love it! Dried fruit, marzipan and alcohol is a wonderful combination.

We also had 3 tiers of fruitcake for our wedding cake, my Mum made it and it was fab. We have saved a tier for the christening. 4 and a half years later DC1 is due early next year so I'm hoping the cake we saved is still good or I'll be very upset by the waste of a lovely fruitcake!

ChocolateTearDrops · 06/12/2018 14:43

Fruitcake, Christmas cake, Christmas pud are all yummy!
