Anyone tried magnesium for sleep? Supplements or lotion...

Hi,

Wasn't sure where to post, so thought I'd give it a go here for traffic.

So I've been considering taking magnesium, but I take iron and hear they don't mix well, so temporarily put me off.

I go through phases where I can't relax and calm down enough to drop off. Lavender oil can help, but when my anxious really high, it's very difficult.

Has anyone tried magnesium pills or lotion? I thought if I take them or put the lotion on at night, maybe it won't counteract the iron....

TIA

A lot of magnesium supplements have a laxative effect.

You could try a bath with Epsom salts in it. It is reasonably cheap and the bath may help. You could put some lavender in it. Roman chamomile is nice with it but more expensive.

The jury seems to be out on whether you can absorb it through the skin. I have tried a water based spray and an oil based spray and they both leave me feeling sticky.

If you take the iron earlier and magnesium at bedtime you'll be fine. Magnesium glycinate is meant to be the better form for sleep, and is also gentler on the digestive system so less chance of side effects.

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah.... wouldn't want any of those side effects Confused Iron comes with it own!

The problem is, I usually take iron later on, as you also can't take iron with caffeine, so like to give it several hours so it absorbs properly.

Yes, I have been taking magnesium tablets in the hope they will help me sleep. I haven't noticed any improvement I'm sorry to say.

Have you tried melatonin? It hasn't worked for me but lots of people have very good results with it. I thought it maybe was helping me get to sleep but I still wake up throughout the night.

Hehe getting timings/interactions etc sorted when you're on multiple vitamins is a nightmare. I was on both and actually hoped for mag side effects to counter the iron ones 😅

Stay away from it! I tried it out of desperation. Spent a lot on a good quality one (Solgar) and gave it 3 weeks. My God I could have shit through the eyehole of a needle Shock (sorry!) I stuck with it for 3 weeks in the hope that the side affects would ease off but they didn't! and it did nothing for my sleep either. Still haven't found anything that works, I have no bother falling asleep but I wake constantly through the night. If you find a cure OP, please let me know!

I have found since I started using the lush sleepy cream that I stay asleep better. I still find it hard to fall asleep but rarely wake up in the night now. I jusy rub it into my arms.

I use the Better You sensitive magnesium oil spray before bed and have experienced no side effects.
