Nintendo Switch or PS4?

Hi, I posted a couple of weeks ago asking about how suitable a PS4 is for my 9yr old. I was told to go with what his friends have as they can communicate and a PS4 is good.

But I’ve just read his santa list (secretly as he won’t tell me what’s on it!) and he’s asked for a nintendo switch.

So should I get him what he’s asked for (which sounds daft!) or is a PS4 better?

Thanks

my girls have a ps4 and i've bought them a switch for xmas. from what i can tell the nintendo is good for family games and interacting but i think the ps4 is better if he plays online with friends like my dd10 does. she adds her friends from school on playstation network and plays minecraft etc with them. it also depends on the type of games he likes too though. whilst minecraft and fortnite are on both the switch has the mario donkey kong and crash bandicoot whereas ps4 are more gamers like cod and fortnite or the lego games.

Thanks mummy from what you’ve said I think I’d rather he had the switch. I’d prefer him not to be online at 9 tbh.

Plus the games you’ve mention fornthe switch sound more family friendly.
Thanks

If he wants the switch i would get that. It’s a great console. The games aren’t cheap if you buy from normal shops but there are sales in the eshop and some brilliant indie games too.

We have both, the switch is much much better for kids. My 9 year old plays a couple of games on the ps4 but LOVES his switch. He is not online on the ps4 either.

HannaSong · 05/12/2018 20:57

Switch is better for that age, much better range of games for kids. Also loads of his friends will probably have one or will be getting one :)

You can communicate with your friends on certain games on the switch as well using a headset so the option is there

Fab! Thanks! The Switch it is!

He will grow out of the switch and it's games within around two or three years. The PS4 also has kid friendly games. E.g Just dance etc

Lessstressedhemum · 02/07/2020 10:46

Switch is much better, really, especially for kids. I don't agree that he will grow out of the games.
My adult children still play switch regularly. Zelda, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Ring fit, just dance, Animal Crossing, the list goes on and on. It's true that there aren't that many violent, shooter type games on Nintendo consoles, but that isn't really a drawback, afaiac.

Kpo58 · 02/07/2020 10:57

Definitely the switch. Many games are on all 3 consoles, but the switch has more family friendly games (and the Nintendo exclusives such as Zelda and Mario cart)

Tytyy · 02/07/2020 11:40

By numbers there are more family friendly (pegi 3/7) games on PS4 -around 300. On the switch there are only around 150. Mario kart/zelda/Kirby etc are all Nintendo exclusive, but PS4 does have games that are similar (some are even better) Crash team racing, the missing link etc. The PS4 has a better range of games PERIOD. it will serve your child from 7 years old all the way to 50. And it's not just "violent" shooter games I'm talking about. I mean things like: Spiderman homecoming, uncharted, fortnite (yes it's on the switch but it's a better, fuller game on PS4.). And the graphics/features as well. The PS4 has free games every month, native YouTube support which the switch still doesn't have.

Tytyy · 02/07/2020 11:42

I agree that for a 7-10 year old the switch is better
